We stayed in the Cuckmere Room, one night only - it's spacious, bright clean and tastefully decorated. The best thing for me though was the fantastically comfortable bed and the view. The bathroom isn't the biggest but it's absolutely fine. Haven't had such a good night's sleep in a long time. The ten minute walk to the village is very romantic (if you choose to walk across the fields), we had a drink in a little pub on the way and it was easy to get a taxi back, after an excellent dinner at the George. Breakfast was very good too - fantastic quality and great attention to detail. A small space, the breakfast room could do with a little music though to relax the atmosphere a bit, but this is a minor niggle. Our hosts, Richard and Judy, were laid-back, friendly and helpful. A real gem.

Room Tip: Cuckmere Room has a wonderful view of the Downs.

This is the perfect B&B. A warm welcome from Richard and Judy, who are wonderful sources of local information (Judy is amarathon runner and hill-walker) and nothing is too much trouble. We based ourselves at Riverdale House for 2 nights in order to walk 2 stages of the South Downs Way (Eastbourne to Rodmell). We hope we are as lucky in our choice of B&B for the next stages!

We stayed in the Cuckmere Room which was delightful; a large comfortable room, splendid views with spotless bed linen and everything was top class. Plenty of off street car parking, storage for road or mountain bikes and WiFi access is available in the sitting room. The mobile phone signal is weak – but this is nothing to do with Riverdale House – anyhow many might regard this as a blessing in this day and age!

The breakfasts are quite delicious, served in the conservatory, freshly cooked from top class local ingredients and everyone working at Riverdale House is cheerful and friendly. Highly recommend Richard’s banana cake, which provided great comfort and energy when we were walking on the Downs!

Alfriston is charming village and is an easy 8-10 minute walk away. The whole walk is on tarmac footpaths, the first section raised above the road. Yes, there might be mud and leaves in winter and you need a torch at night, but what do you expect when you stay in the country??!! Plenty of restaurants to choose from in Alfriston - we had an excellent dinner at The George Inn. We would love to return to Riverdale House for another weekend!

Room Tip: Heselwood Suite or Cuckmere Rook

My husband and I spent three nights at Riverdale House in June this year. We were warmly welcomed by Richard, our host, who showed us to a beautifully appointed ensuite bedroom with views over the South Downs.

The room was spacious - well equipped with WiFi, two TVs and plenty of seating. The bed was large and comfortable with bed linen of high quality.

The location was perfect, on the edge of the village near to restaurants, pubs and interesting shops.

Breakfast was made to order and delicious, including free range eggs from the hens next door!

We borowed maps and enjoyed a walk to Charleston Farm. Richard kindly collected us and brought us back to Alfriston when the heavens opened and the bus failed to appear.

I would thoroughly reccomend Riverdale and will certainly be back next year.

Wonderful welcome, huge room, huge bed, lovely breakfast. And a really peaceful location as the house is set back from the road (which isn't that busy anyway). Can't recommend it highly enough.

We stayed one night while walking the Soiuth Downs Way. Riverdale is very close to the SDW, some 9 minutes wlak from the centre of Alfriston - which is the nearest place for an evening meal. Beautiful views over the valley and very peaceful. The room was clean and comfortable, and we slept very well. The breakfast was absolutely first class, good choice and quality well prepared. Mein host was friendly enough, although seemed a little distracted when we first arrived and we did not actually get the room we had reserved (the one with the bath!) - no reason given. However all was perfectly satisfactory, and would definitely go again

We stayed in the large family room, which was really comforable and very clean. Fantastic views from the windows. So nice to have delicious biscuits , fresh coffee and tea in our room, which was much needed. There were comfortable sofas and good magazines to read in the room. The towels and linen were also good quality and clean. Breakfast was delicious, and very good quality of produce.Richard was really friendly and made the children feel really welcome too , they really loved staying there. Lots of local places to eat out locally in the evening . We all really enjoyed our visit and would highly recommend a stay here.

We stayed for a week and had the largest room which was ideal for our family as it had dividing doors between our room and our children's room. Judy and Richard, our hosts, thoroughly spoilt us. Beautiful breakfasts, with special effort made for our youngest daughter who is gluten-free. Our bed was extremely comfortable. Home-made bickkies were refilled everyday! Couldn't fault the place at all. Highly recommended.
