What a great location and beautiful house . My partner and I spent a relaxing weekend in this fine bed and breakfast . We stayed in the cuckmere room which was very light and airy . The large bed was very comfortable and made extra luxurious with egyptian cotton sheets . The large fluffy bath towels were wonderful to wrap yourself in as you step out of the large bath tub .
The breakfast was really great with a good choice .
Richard and Judy are lovely hosts and made us feel very welcome and looked after in their home .
We ate in the village where there is plenty of choice of restaurants and pubs .

We stayed here overnight on our way from Cheshire to Newhaven for a wedding in France. What an absolute delight in every respect - the welcome from Richard, the views, the accommodation, the breakfast and above all the service of which more later. Travelling North to South through Alfriston the property is on the right hand side of the road after leaving Alfriston village and is well signed up a steep driveway. There are magnificent views over the South Downs and well enough away from the road to be totally peaceful. There was a truly warm welcome from Richard and the accommodation was, as suggested by others, more like a boutique hotel. Breakfast was probably the best we have had for some time and certainly on this trip, which included six days in France. The highlight (or perhaps lowlight!) was the fact that I made the mistake of leaving one of my wife's bags behind in the desire to get to the ferry on time. On calling Richard, from the other side of Customs at the ferry terminal, to let him know we would collect the bag on our return trip, we were absolutely amazed and delighted that he insisted on dropping everything and dashed down to the terminal with our luggage - some 20 minutes away - in the (successful) hope that he would catch us before the ferry left. Truly service (and attitude) above and beyond the call of duty and something that is so rare to find. We cannot recommend Riverdale House highly enough.

Officially, Riverdale House is a B&B, but it feels more like a small, elegant and friendly boutique hotel. Our room was beautifully appointed, with comfortable bed, crisp linens, small-but-fabulous bathroom. We had a gorgeous view of the downs. Richard and Judy were attentive hosts, providing evening fires in the sitting room, offering us the use of the conservatory for a picnic dinner and giving excellent advice about local eateries and excursions. The breakfasts were a sumptuous affair--many courses, excellent ingredients, and cooked to perfection. We were sorry to leave after three nights and look forward to a return visit. Highly recommend!

Room Tip: We chose a room in the front of the house and had a great view of the downs, the rabbits (and fox) f...

Despite it being a soaking wet weekend, we enjoyed a marvellous stay at this high quality bed and breakfast in the heart of the South Downs.
The hosts, Richard and Judy were on hand at all times to meet and greet, advise, help and generally make sure that all their guests were looked after.
Well appointed bedroom, cosy bed and a marvellous breakfast.

Cannot fault it !!!

I stopped here whilst traveling along the South Downs Way with friends. Richard and Judy provided an excellent service. They offered to dry wet shoes over night, providing torches for the walk to the pub and sun cream for the following day.
The accommodation was lovely, the view fantastic and the breakfast excellent.
I will be coming back with my wife.

Spent a very pleasant Saturday night here as we walked from Lewes to Eastbourne on the South Downs way. Alfriston is a charming village, and despite being a good few minutes walk out of the village, the house's setting makes up for it.

There were nice touches, such as the milk fridge in the room, and the welcome was suitably warm for two wearyish walkers.

For me, the bed was too soft, but I do like particularly firm mattresses. It was nice and big though, which always helps when you're over 6-foot. The view from the room was also lovely, and I can imagine on a warmer day that sitting outside on the lawn with a glass of something would be a great way to start the evening.

Assuming one walks into the village for dinner, you will need to borrow one of Richard & Judy's torches to get back, but you can walk on pavement or path the whole way, rather than on the road itself.

Felt a little odd having to order every single element of breakfast the night before - not everyone knows which fruit juice they're going to feel like in the morning, or whether it's a coffee or a tea kind of day. But anyway, what we ended up with was very nice.

We are two vegans who stopped for one night while traveling the South Downs Way. Richard and Judy were quite helpful with pub recommendations for the night, torches for the walk, etc. They were also quite accommodating of our diet, and managed a phenomenal breakfast (vegan sausages, beans, toast, mushrooms, tomatoes cooked to perfection...on top of the fruit, cereal, soymilk, and tea!). The view from the breakfast room was one of my favorite features. The room was comfortable and very clean.
