Stayed for a couple of nights, great location lovely old pub, Food, especially the breakfasts, was excellent and the beer just right. But little things spoilt the overall impression - somewhat casual welcome, (the bar wasn't busy), parking a couple hundred metres from the pub, the room was OK but the toilet seat was the wrong size for the bowl so slipped off whilst in throes- noisy and alarming !! Great place to stay but just a bit overpriced.

Stayed here for 5 nights on a return visit to beautiful Alfriston. This character inn is warm, cosy and comfortable, not to mention good value. Staff friendly and breakfasts incredibly generous. Felt right at home and would stay again next time I visit from Australia.

Decided to stay in Alfriston at the last minute and were delighted with this recommendation from the staff at the Wingrove Hotel along the road. We had a choice of two rooms and had no problem choosing which one. I have never stayed in such an amazing old room. It was as if we had travelled back 300 years with a vaulted tudor ceiling, original wall coverings and you could see through the gaps in the wall to the outside, cant get more original than this place! Staff really helpful when needed! We had to ask for loo rolls as they hadn't serviced the room properly but instantly sorted. Great breakfast included. Great atmosphere in the lounge and bar areas.

Booked a table for 13 on a Saturday night. Excellent ale!, no complaints there. Staff were friendly but seemed a bit distracted at times. Starters were good, but the mains took ages to appear. My shoulder of beef served with mash would have been first class if it had been hot. Suspect it had been sitting on the pass for an extended period? A steak ordered without mustard sauce, appeared with said sauce, however, it was replaced quickly without any fuss. The staff were going through their closing activities as we paid the bill immediately after finishing our deserts, we were the last to leave!. Seeing that we sat down at 8 gives an idea of the speed of the service that night. Yes I would go back to give them a second try as the ambiance and quality of what was served was generally good.

It is interesting to read such mixed reviews of The George as our party of three found it really hard to find fault (and we can be quite critical!). I know we had walked 25 miles so maybe anything would have been welcome but I actually think the reverse is true. We were really tired so at risk of seeing things in a rather negative light. We had rooms 2 and 3 - both had wonderful high beamed ceilings and room 2 had a lovely fireplace - both were full of original character. The bathrooms were on the smallish size but absolutely fine. Everything was spotlessly clean and the bed was really comfortable. Literally the only fault was that you could hear everything from the rooms next door. There is nothing the hotel can really do about that and it is only going to be a major problem and if you are a light sleeper and the people next door are noisy. Wonderful choice of cooked breakfasts (not just the standard fry-up but also haddocks and kippers).
