“A dog owner's delight”

Ye Old Smugglers Inne

It would be hard to find a more dog-friendly establishment than this. Having worked long and hard to get my husband to agree to a weekend away with the pooch, I was delighted to find that dogs are welcomed whole-heartedly in this establishment! Let me qualify this - our dog is very "special needs". Having been abused by her previous owners, we have to take special care when out and about that she can have her "space". This can lead to us being restricted and not able to participate fully in the atmosphere of a pub or restaurant.
This is most certainly not the case at the Smugglers Inne. One helpful waitress even realised that our restaurant table was not ideally situated for the dog's comfort and therefore our relaxation, so she moved us. How considerate is that?
Our evening meal was very enjoyable, with a nicely cooked sirloin steak the man event. Our breakfast this morning was relaxed and ample. Maybe some local artisan bread would be a nicer touch than the normal white/wholemeal slice, but I am just being picky.
The Inne itself is very atmospheric. Our room was small but perfectly formed and the bathroom was tiny but functional. In an old property such as this, there is little you can do to alter room sizes and arrangements but the new owners of the Inne seem to be making the most of the building's quirky features.
From speaking with the new owners and local customers, they have already done much to revive the fortunes of this pub/restaurant/B&B and I feel sure this will continue. Yes, a refresh of décor and a coat of paint here or there would be an idea, but all in good time..., there is no rush.
I would recommend this place to anyone wanting a weekend break walking over the beautiful South Downs. Who would not enjoy the beautiful scenery, appreciate a tasty meal and a comfortable bed at the end of the day. A lovely cooked breakfast to send you on your way is the icing on the cake!

We stayed at Ye Old Smugglers Inne 11th - 13th March 2014. Couldn't fault it. Arrived to a very warm welcome by Simon and his wonderful team, who couldn't have been more accommodating if they tried! We stayed in the Harveys Room, very cosy and spacious. Massive in fact, and had use of our very own bathroom with shower next door to the room. The room was ideal size for myself, my wife and 2 year old daughter (who slept in her travel cot). Room and beds very comfortable and has everything you need - sink, TV/DVD and tea/coffee facilities. The property itself is very charming indeed. And as for the evening meal and full english breakfast.... compliments to the chef. Delicious!!! Parking was free in the nearby public car park for 3 hours, and all night - never had a problem parking. Alfriston is absolutely beautiful and unspoilt, and offers many charming independent shops, pubs and walks. Completely unspoilt.

We would definately recommend Ye Old Smugglers and would not hesitate to stay here again in future. Thank you to all at the Smugglers for making our stay so pleasant (and for finding my wife's boots in the car park)!!! :-)

We stayed here for 1 night and WOW what a night! We have met possibly the most friendly welcoming people on the planet, Simon and cath were wonderful!! The food was presented beautifully and the portions were perfect, dinner was wonderful!
we stayed in the inn for some drinks in the evening and we sat in front of the open fire and chatted with the regulars who were also as charming and welcoming and friendly especially a certain few!! We also had a wonderful man teach us to play frogs which is highly recommended. What fun!!

We had a friendly greeting when we arrived and the staff and regulars made us feel welcome for our 2 night stay. The room was comfortable and the lounge was homey.
We ate, we drank, people played with our dogs and we considered staying longer. Sadly, we needed to get back to the north for work.
