It would be hard to find a more dog-friendly establishment than this. Having worked long and hard to get my husband to agree to a weekend away with the pooch, I was delighted to find that dogs are welcomed whole-heartedly in this establishment! Let me qualify this - our dog is very "special needs". Having been abused by her previous owners, we have to take special care when out and about that she can have her "space". This can lead to us being restricted and not able to participate fully in the atmosphere of a pub or restaurant.
This is most certainly not the case at the Smugglers Inne. One helpful waitress even realised that our restaurant table was not ideally situated for the dog's comfort and therefore our relaxation, so she moved us. How considerate is that?
Our evening meal was very enjoyable, with a nicely cooked sirloin steak the man event. Our breakfast this morning was relaxed and ample. Maybe some local artisan bread would be a nicer touch than the normal white/wholemeal slice, but I am just being picky.
The Inne itself is very atmospheric. Our room was small but perfectly formed and the bathroom was tiny but functional. In an old property such as this, there is little you can do to alter room sizes and arrangements but the new owners of the Inne seem to be making the most of the building's quirky features.
From speaking with the new owners and local customers, they have already done much to revive the fortunes of this pub/restaurant/B&B and I feel sure this will continue. Yes, a refresh of décor and a coat of paint here or there would be an idea, but all in good time..., there is no rush.
I would recommend this place to anyone wanting a weekend break walking over the beautiful South Downs. Who would not enjoy the beautiful scenery, appreciate a tasty meal and a comfortable bed at the end of the day. A lovely cooked breakfast to send you on your way is the icing on the cake!
