“Champagne (and mulled wine) service! Great little B&B”
Reviewed 26 December 2009

We popped down to Brighton for a romantic break just before xmas - and Motel Schmotel was just right for us. It was very cold when we arrived so we were pleased when Paul greeted us with a glass of Mulled wine - he also added a small bottle of bubbly when we told him it was our anniversary; a nice touch. The room was bright and quirkily furnished, the whole place has an arty feel. The breakfast in bed was delicious and we found Paul and his wife very friendly. There was massive snowfall, so we decided to stay another night which was not a problem at all and we were offered the same rate as the thursday night, when it should have been a weekend rate.
All in, we would highly recommend MH and would love to go back in the summertime!

Called up last minute due to the catastrophe of Eurostar's attempt to poop on our short X-mas break. Very friendly and accommodating from the start. Flexible for us and on arrival the room was brilliant. Excellent use of space and really close attention to detail in the decor. I really liked the fun, relaxed vibe that came from the place. Brilliant communication so that we could text our breakfast orders in and have breakfast in bed.

The breakfast was amazing. Massive fresh wedges of toast, the parsnips and vegan sausages were so filling. Useful advice about where to go, how to get to places.

DVD player broke and a new one was in our room in a jiffy.

Also on arrival the bedroom tea cups were accompanied by chocolate Penguins....... Ahhh, the little things in life......... I also really liked the milk jug shaped like a cow, and the elephant cookoo clock.

I would really recommend it if you're looking for a friendly, interesting, well decorated, fun place to stay with close proximity to the best parts of Brighton

This is our third time at Motel Schmotel. We go to Brighton for a small break away from London, and even at this time of year it was fantastic. With our 3 boys we are always welcome and looked after.
The new rooms are as wonderful as the others and the decor in the breakfast room is fun, warm and welcoming. Everything is so nearby, it's in a perfect location.
The owners are so lovely and helpful.
We look forward to going again, hopefully in Spring!

Just returned from a weekend staying at Motel Schmotel and would recommend this place 100%, but only if you don't mind small rooms and bathrooms.

We stayed in room two, on the ground floor. The room was spotlessly clean, but although advertised as a standard room, it is on the cosy side of small, along with the ensuite shower room which two definitely can't share! The room is also next to the kitchen, which means you are woken by the smells of breakfast cooking, but its worth it as the breakfasts are superb.

The couple running the b&B are very friendly, with a wealth of information if needed and our arrival on Saturday was made even more welcome with gluwein and mince pies available.

If you are looking for informal accomodation close to the main centre and sea, but in a quiet mews, then this is the place to stay. If you can't reserve parking via the B&B then try Regency Secure parking, a 3-4 minute walk away which charges £10 per night. There's also a nice pub a couple of doors away for a nightcap.

First thing's first - despite the name, this is a hotel or B&B, not a motel! That's in its favour. So, too, are the quirky touches such as the white board in the hall for guests to leave comments, the blackboard with the weather forecasts, and the original artwork throughout the place. Great breakfast, served in your room or the breakfast room (who wouldn't want it in bed?) and I must say it's a quiet place to stay.
It's not perfection, though (few hotels in Brighton are). I'm going to be picky because to read the reviews, you'd think this place was beyond improvement. There's big play about the 'award winning breakfast' and it IS good, but concentrated orange juice lets it down. So does the fact you have to decide the night before (by 10pm) exactly what you'll eat and what time you'll eat it and where. I stayed in a double room as a single occupant, but to be honest I'd have had a very different experience had we been staying as a couple - it was very small for a double - and a very tight shower room with no room in the shower for someone of a larger frame. However, it was immaculate, the bed clothes were crisp and pure white, and the shower pressure quite good (a good test of a hotel I think!).
One other small criticism. When i called to book, the owner said they were ina restaurant and would call me back, which they did but I missed the call so had to call them back again. I said I'd be checking in around 5.30 but that's when they feed their children so I might need to let myself in so when nearby perhaps I could call for an update. A text arrived on the morning with further instructions and when I called 10 minutes away, was told my key was on the back of the door! All this is fine, but hoteliers need to realise the work needs to be on them not the guest. I found this messing around all a bit fussy and irritating on an already busy day. Is it really too much to ask that the hotelier is there to let you in and check you're happy with the room?
So yes, it's a good hotel and a step above many local rivals (especially in this part of Brighton). For the money, it's a good deal but it suits someone of a chilled disposition, not someone who rates service above some other considerations. I'd stay again, it does give the impression of being a hobby rather than a lifestyle.

Great service from lovely people, fun funky décor, good breakfast. Not far from the action in Brighton and a lovely building in a quiet area. I've already recommended it to my colleagues.
