“Grand appearance but slightly disappointing”
Reviewed 30 March 2014

The exterior is very impressive and there is a wonderful, grand interior staircase. The stair carpet on the higher floors needs repairing. My room was large with classic furniture and 2 armchairs. I didn't have a sea view and the room looked out onto an ugly wall. The bed was very comfortable. There were 2 singles pushed together which was fine for me as I was on my own but may not suit everyone. There was no desk lamp, clock, conditioner (only shampoo) or small extendible bathroom mirror. Only 4 milk sachets.

The gym is small but contains usual running machines, cross trainers etc

Breakfast - it was lovely sitting in the enclosed terrace but the food was ordinary. There was fresh fruit but it didn't look in the best condition. There were little pots of jam but only strawberry. Why couldn't there be other flavours too? The bacon was very salty. The pot of tea was excellent.

For an expensive chain of hotels it didn't meet all my expectations

Room Tip: Higher floors and a sea view

It's all just a bit tired and doesn't work very well.

Bizarre rules on billing mean that you can charge room-service to your room, but not the £5 "tray charge". This left me stumbling around in my dressing gown for a fiver.

Lifts take forever to arrive.

There's no valet parking (yet there's an NCP behind - why can't the hotel come to an arrangement, like other normal hotels?).

The staff are surly and inarticulate, and, frankly, struggled a bit too much with English.

The room service breakfast is microscopic.

There is no turn-down service (and our room had 10 curtains, so quite a performance).

Decor looks very tired and a tad too eighties.

All in all very disappointing.

It would be a bit dispiriting at £200 a night, but at £379, it's just a plain rip-off and not worthy of more than three stars. We shall never return.

I live in Brighton and had used the bar at the Grand on occasion but had never stayed as a guest so we picked it over the rest of the best hotels in Brighton to stay for four nights for a special treat for our wedding. Our stay was very enjoyable, we booked one of the best rooms, deluxe king sea view, we had a beautiful balcony with stunning views, enormous and sumptuous bed and the room was decorated extremely tastefully. Bathroom was not quite as fancy as the rest of our suite but was still fresh, clean and elegant. We used room service on several occasions which was on the whole very good, only one time when we asked for an ice bucket did we have to chase it up a couple of times before it arrived.
I used the room for getting ready for the ceremony and had my Mum, all my girlfriends and the bridesmaids all welcomed in by the staff.
We also dined in the seafood restaurant one evening and were thoroughly impressed by the food, the service and the atmosphere.
The hotel knew we were getting married and there was a complimentary bottle of Champagne on ice for our arrival which was a lovely touch and very much appreciated.
I also used the spa in the basement which has been recently refurbished to a very high standard. I would certainly use the spa again even as a non guest as the prices were very reasonable, on a par to other quality beauty salons in town.
All in all we felt extremely well looked after and loved our 4 nights of luxury. We didn't want to check out.

we visted the main bar at the grand hotel on Wednesday 26/3/14.
As usual the service was excellent and the bar was well equipped with a varity of drinks with an extensive wine list.
The staff did their best to put everybody at ease, and create an atmosphere of shear pleasure.
I always visit the bar at the grand everytime I am in brighton.

We had a rather uncomfortable stay last year, due to heat, not being able to open windows, bathroom heater permanently on and whilst these things happen I felt complaint had been badly dealt with and evasive.
However,we have just given the Grand a second chance and the difference was tangible.Wonderful balconied room, first class facilities and staff were friendly and obliging from check-in to leaving.
Bed was enormous, comfy and I could not fault anything.
A main bonus was out of season the Brighton cacophony was down to a minimum,to wake up to the views of the sea was wonderful.
Thank you all for redeeming yourself.

Room Tip: Sea view essential, large luxurious rooms add to ambience.

The Grand Hotel , Brighton looks like a wonderful Edwardian lady and promises so much but turned out to be a poor choice for this conference attendee. I stayed in the hotel for 4 nights as an international visitor and the hotel was adjacent to the conference venue - recommended by the conference organisers. I was checked into a more economical room - my first mistake The room was adequate but the window faced a wall and the lighting in the room was insufficient - it was gloomy! Other conference delegates, even in larger rooms complained about the lighting levels in their rooms too. The shower was over a bath but was adequate. Buffet breakfast was included in the room tariff but menu fatique was instant - You knew what was on offer for 4 days and it was not great. Service in the restaurant focused on coffee or tea was a random event but consistently late in arriving. The reception to the restaurant was friendly and caring but the rest just disappointed. The building itself is charming but don't look over the internal balcony - it is disturbingly dangerous. the floors feel unstable and they moved when people slammed doors and walked over them - it kind of made you think about health and safety regulations.\

The finally issue for me was the firm denial of a late check ou because the Hotel was to closed at midday for another conference. My conference finished at 1pm and I needed to change for an international connection and flight. Would it be possible to check out at 1:15pm? Absolutely not we are closed at midday and we are preparing for a large group who are coming in today.

My advice, stay at another hotel - enjoy a walk in the light of day and see if there is a better quality and more customer focused hotel in the vicinity - I wish I had done so!

Room Tip: Do not choose an economical room - you will be trapped in lightless windowless space. There are nice...

We just had a 1 night midweek break for our anniversary. We arrived Early and was given our room before normal check-in time which was great. we went to our room to find that there was in fact two types of the same king size bedrooms and we had been placed in a different one from what we booked online. after talking to a staff member the manager came to the room within 5 mins to show us to the room we booked online and changed us over without a fuss. the room was a great size modern and clean complementary tea Starbucks coffee hot chocolate and water in the room Nice Bathrobe and slippers also!
We had 2 spa Treatments booked and was very impressed from start to finish the Receptionist was very friendly and showed us around after changing into our spa robes we was shown to the relaxation room which was heaven! shortly after we was taken to our treatment rooms by our Massage Therapist we both booked a 50min hot stone massage which was lovely we then floated back to the relaxation room to chill and help ourselves to complementary tea coffee water juice or cakes! after returning to the hotel room after dinner we found the tv to have all the sky channels which my partner was very impressed with! the bed was very comfy and we had a great nights sleep.
The next morning we went down for breakfast was seated and taken over the menu or buffet options and told hotel guests was welcome to a complementary buffet with everything you would want at breakfast time on offer full English fruits cereals cakes and fresh juices. or a small menu which would be charged to our room. of course we went for the complementary breakfast which was great and you was welcome to go back up for something else.
the breakfast room was lovely over looking the sea, the staff in the whole hotel where so nice helpful and made you feel very welcome which for that reason and the great services they offered we will return again & again to the Grand Hotel.

Room Tip: We had the Chambre Unique Room
