Had a nice stay here over the last couple of days . Normally we wouldn't eat dinner in a hotel restaurant as there are so many good restaurants in town but the GB1 restaurant was so good that I highly recommend you eat there rather than go out - it was excellent. HOWEVER as with an earlier review which I hadn't seen beforehand our stay was spoilt somewhat by our bill revealing a 10% service charge for drinks served in the bar ! - isn't that what hotels do - serve you ? When I challenged this at reception I was told this was ' clearly shown on the menu ' - of course it was - which was why I didn't see it ! I really think this practice should be stopped as it undermines what is otherwise a very pleasant experience staying here.

Thank you for your review following your recent stay and your meal in GB1

I am delighted that overall you had a great stay and thank you in particular for your generous compliments about the dinner in GB1

On the point about service charge we will monitor this closely and make a levelled decision if the problem escalates. However I should point out again that the service charge is discretionary, can be removed without question and is only applied when food and drinks are served to tables as part of our table service as opposed to when customers make their own way to the bar

kind regards

I love Brighton. I love its grunginess, its feistiness, its griminess, its intimacy and its anarchic sense of freedom.

I also love the Grand Hotel - it’s a mad combination of wedding-cake architecture and calm sophistication, all set in a brilliant city. My wife and I got married in the Grand 13 years ago, and we’ve been back several times, most recently yesterday.

The staff were helpful and warm, the room was large and elegantly decorated, the bar staff made great martinis, the car parking worked easily (this is a big problem in Brighton), and, most importantly, the room had a truly magnificent view over the piers and the sea.

Sure, there were a couple of glitches with room service (no answer on the phone and an over-early breakfast delivery), but, overall, we had a really great stay.

Fantastic hotel. Fantastic city.

Room Tip: Get a sea-facing room as high up the building as you can. The views are amazing, and they get better...

Naturally we all agree - Brighton is a fantastic place to visit and it goes without saying that, as a team, we are very proud to work at The Grand.

We constantly strive to get things absolutely right so we will take your small criticism on board and act on it

However overall I'm delighted you had a great time

best wishes

This was our first time staying at The Grand. From the moment we arrived the service was first class. This truly is a grand old hotel with a long heritage, OK it's a little crumbly in places but for us that added to the appeal. Our refurbished room on the 6th floor had a wonderful sea view and was huge, with a large balcony to soak up the beautiful Brighton sunshine and ambiance. The bathroom was quite small considering the size of the room but that didn't bother us. There was no mini bar either. Outside it was quite noisy on the sea front but in the room you couldn't hear it and we had a really good nights sleep in the huge bed with wonderful sheets. Breakfast was buffet style or orders from the restaurant, we could not fault the food or selection, especially the bacon which was excellent. We had dinner in the restaurant which was superb. It's not cheap but then you are paying for a wonderful experience. We can't recommend it highly enough and will definitely stay at The Grand again.

Room Tip: Sea view room on 6th floor

This was our 3rd time here and it did not disappoint. We had a fantastic room recently refurbished
it was clean and beautifully decorated with doors onto a balcony overlooking the sea. The staff were as usual excellent. Gareth who served us in the restaurant was one of the best waiters we have ever had, informative and helpful without be overbearing. The food in the evening was superb and the breakfast was also one of the best we have had. The Seekers (Australian group from seventies) are doing their 50th anniversary tour in the UK and they were staying there so must be up to their standard too. Another stay will happen. Bed was so comfortable and big!

We were staying at the Grand as we were attending a charity event.Reception was very efficient and friendly, unfortunately there was a mix up over room numbers,we all make mistakes sometimes
.The important thing is always how you respond, the staff were great and even gave us a bottle of wine, which was very kind especially since I could hardly stop laughing and have been dining out on the story. Our room was perfectly comfortable ,but the high point of the stay was breakfast.I can't remember the last time I had comb honey and coupled with the freshly cooked fried eggs served on muffins and all the other wonderful treats it could not be faulted.

Thank you for your kind comments on Trip Advisor following your stay at The Grand

I'm sorry about the mix up you mention but glad we recovered the situation for you - something we empower our staff to do if there is a hitch

As for the honey comb - I'm really glad you enjoyed that littlle treat we lay on at breakfast as part of our extensive buffet offering coupled with the freshly cooked items to order.

We visited the Grand at the weekend and whilst we have been before the complete refurbishment of the hotel is extremely impressive.

We had a sea view deluxe room and it was fantastically decorated and very large with lots of comforts.

We worth a visit and very competitively priced. The GB1 restaurant is excellent and the food was delicious.

Thank you for your kind comments on Trip Advisor following your stay at The Grand over Bank Holiday

I'm very pleased you thought the new refurb was impressive. I'm pleased to say there are still some more "tweaks" to come (with no disruption) to further improve on what was completed last year which included all rooms refurbished, new restaurant (GB1), new spa and redecoration to the lounge

Stayed here several times before. Everything was fine as usual but watch out for the 10% service charge added to the bar bill. I am used to service being added to a restaurant bill and always check for it before tipping but, I've never seen it added to a bar bill before so didn't check. I ended up double tipping all my drinks. It wasn't much but if I'd noticed I would not have tipped the drinks. This charge wasn't in place on my last stay. Will look out for it next time.

Thank you for your review

I am pleased that overall you had a good time

Regarding service this is only applied to food and drinks served by lounge staff to customers at tables (not drinks across the bar) and is discretionary

Many thanks again for letting us have your feedback
