“Disappointingly low standards for a Grand Hotel!”
Reviewed 17 May 2009

May is a strange month in England. It can be warm, it can be cold, but overall you wouldn't class May as a Summer month...yet at the Grand, the heating in our suite was switched off as it is "Summer now Sir!"
The small asthmatic fan heater they sent up needed to be left on in each room with the door closed for the room to heat, then be moved...very 1950's holiday camp, not Grand Hotel.
The morning shower was not taken as the bathroom was distinctly chilly.
The valet parking has gone too..."it wasn't cost-effective"...strange how the SAME £25.00 parking charge applied...the NCP next door, by the way is half the price.
The food was still great though, and the staff lovely, just clearly the management letting the side down.

Despite its excellent location, the hotel failed to live up to its reputation. The room was cramped, noisy and the frosted-out windows were frequently visited by boisterous pigeons. Breakfast wasn't any better either. Could get better food and service from a Little Chef. Thinking about the money we spent on the room just makes me angry, so I'll leave it there...

I am surprised at some of the negative reports about this hotel. Firstly the reports about parking are unfounded as the overnight parking rate of £25 is the same as an NCP nearby and certainly safer. When leaving the hotel my car was brought to the rear door, had help with my bags-you don't get that in an NCP !!
As for the rooms, our experience was fantastic, we were upgraded without asking, the bed was so comfortable, the bathroom spacious and well equiped, room service (breakfast in bed) was prompt, friendly and they wouldn't accept a tip (might be company policy?).
After a great evening out at a seafood restaurant, Riddle & Finn (see seperate review), followed by a couple of hours at the nearby casino we went to the bar at the hotel for a nightcap (about 01:30 I think) we were greeted by a charming barman who could not have been more helpful despite a still crowded bar.
We had a great experience and hope to visit again soon.

The De Vere Grand at Brighton in located brilliantly on the beach front at Brighton, very close to The Lanes. That is about where the positives end. Going there for my partner's birthday, we thought we'd treat ourselves to a great hotel, however the facilities and service really left a lot to be desired for. Amongst other things, our room wasn't ready at the 3pm check in time (although we had arrived earlier and left our luggage so they knew we would be back at 3pm), there was no WiFi in-room as sold on the website, there was no minibar to speak of, they only left one set of towels in the bathroom, the tv was old and the remote did not work, at breakfast we had to ask for tea and coffee (they brought the coffee and did not bring the tea) and this might start sounding petty but at breakfast they were offering a breakfast smoothie, When the jug was empty I asked if they were making some more and was rather rudely told no there was no more smoothie today... however minutes later I see new full jugs of smoothie! Like i said, sounds petty but it is the principal of the matter. The service at this hotel really was very disappointing, especially for the costly nightly rate.

Having read some of the previous reviews I was a little worried as I had booked the Grand as a surprise 50th birthday treat for my husband. I should not have been on arrival the reception staff were very friendly and helpful, we had a newly refurbished room with a huge bed and bathroom which was beautiful, very clean. At dinner the food was excellent although I should point out their is quite a limited selection of dishes, again the waiting staff very friendly and helpful.Breakfast was also very good with a choice of hot food, cereals, fruits and continental breakfast. All in all a great stay and we will book again.

We have just come back from a weekend break at the Grand (on one of their special offers. The Hotel itself is wonderful - very grand entrance, large but cosy bar area and a nice restaurent. We had standard rooms which were nice enough but could really do with a lick of paint and a spruce up. Nice big bathroom (although getting the water temperature right is tricky - the shower is scalding on anything more than a 'tepid' setting. Huge comfortable bed. Service in the hotel is flawless. We eat in the hotel bar and although slightly pricey, the food was very good (watch out fo the coffees though - I ordered a macchiatto and got an espresso cup of froth and when I ordered a Latte, I got a macchiatto). Breakfast is a buffet affair with just about anything you could want (sorry - no fish!) and is of a good standard. Lastly, yes the parking is steep at #25, but this lasts until 3pm the following day and not dreadful when you consider that the parking at the Holiday Inn is #15/night. All in all a very nice hotel.
