“Great New Year's party but rooms are now shabby”
Reviewed 30 January 2011

We went to celebrate New Year and had a great night - well-organised, food was fine, the band and singers were excellent, service was haphazard but we kind of expected that on NYE with a large group.

Otherwise the hotel is decent but has seen better days. The rooms were tired and gloomy, breakfast was a bit chaotic and the leisure facilities have been closed for some time. There are better places to stay in Brighton for a better price, but we loved the New year's eve party.

I have never written a review before but I was taken to the Grand Hotel by my husband as a suprise - having grown up with Brighton as my "local" seaside, it is somewhere I have always wanted to stay. Before going, my husband checked the reviews and was a bit worried as some were not positive. On hearing this and following our stay I had to put ours on. We are well travelled and have stayed in some amazing hotels around the world so we have other experiences against which to measure The Grand. Our room had a wide balcony overlooking the sea, it was beautifully furnished, huge bed and very comfortable. The Grand is a victorian building and it has been beautifully restored. The locations for Brighton is perfect. Standing on the balcony in the evening and looking at the lights of th pier and out to sea is amazing - but on top of all this wonderful elegance is the service and cuisine. Dinner was excellent value and wonderful - we had wood pidgeon, scallops, pheasant and my husband had a fabulous fish pie. The staff could not do enough for us and despite what was clearly a busy night with a full restaurant and ball room they remembered our names and made as much time for us as we wanted. Our waiter (Jann) and the barman (Gorath) not only provided excellent service but were extremely personable and attentive (and good company). Breakfast again is wonderful, an array of choice and the best we have experienced. The surroundings adds to the whole experience of victorian elegance, beautiful views of the sea and attention to detail made a 1 night stay feel like a holiday. Appreciate where you are, Brighton is unique, The Grand is an historic landmark, take note of this and appreciate where you are. We will go back!

Always wanted to stay in this hotel but did rather spend 2 nights 'trying to keep my chin up'. We did go for the cheap rooms on 6th floor. Frosted windows, damp stains on ceiling, carpet coming up. Queue to check in, not enough receptionists. Huge queue it breakfast. Fruit tired! However in the main the staff were good and attentive.

We have stayed at the Grand Harbour ( a De Vere hotel) many times before, but would think long and hard about returning here again.
The reception was very good and the introduction to the hotel looked favourable. We were staying one night for a relaxing night out, but when we cameback to the room much later, we found there was no way to turn the heating down, it was like an oven.
I opened all the windows including the bathroom and tried toi sleep ( it was late and we were exhausted so didn't want to swap rooms.
I complained next morning before going into breakfast, which is were it became embarassing to think of its former glory?
We were shown to a table in the conservatory but no request for our order of tea or coffee was taken, when the same woman showed more people in, I asked her and was told a waiter would take our order soon.
After several minutes more I went and found a waiter gave him our order and said nobody else around us has had an order taken either.
Ten minutes plus after we had come in the original woman came and took orders for tea and coffee?
The hot buffet had less than 25% of the trays containing any food for over ten minutes, I had the last bacon while my wife was having cereal, all she found was sausage and black pudding??
Then to make matters worse the sun came out and the conservatory resembled a sauna, many people were using their menus as fans, I told the staff who said they would turn the heating off, have they not heard of air conditioning?
I have complained FOUR times to De Vere and have had no response from management so far, this is the fifth.

We held our annual employee conference for 250 employees and I have never experienced such an amazing team. The hotel has amazing old charm, great food in a brilliant sea front location

Stayed at The Grand for New Years Eve and think the hotel relys on trading on its name

We stayed on the 6th floor and found the rooms very disappointing. The bathroom was large but dated with a shower that dribbled water, the bath stained, one bath tap was broken and the could of done with a lick of paint. The bedroom again was a good size but the furniture was tatty and old, all the windows were frosted which made the room feel almost dingy and it generally needed repainting, the bed was v comfy though. Apart from the foyer and bar the communal areas pretty tired which is a shame because you could see it used to be an amazing hotel in the past

The staff were pleasant enough but the check-in and out at reception could have been better organised as there were long queues

The breakfast buffet was choas and needs to be better arranged to avoid queues and the breakfast room depressing with peeling paint

Unless you plan to stay in one of the seaview rooms which are meant to be a better standard I would book another hotel

The service at the hotel was very good. Big improvement on when I last stayed 5 years ago. Nice to have English staff. Room very good even though not a seaview. Nice big comfortable bed. Staff at breakfast were exceptionally helpful and coureous
