Stayed for 3 nights for a conference in Brighton , booked well in advance and got a good deal. The room was small but very clean and tidy and had been updated. No view and scaffolding but we were aware of this before hand. The staff were excellent and the breakfast was first class. All the staff were helpful and friendly especially on the breakfast buffet in a hotel which was full. The parking is not cheap but is similar to many major towns and cities , undercover at £ 16.00 per day.No noise at night, Stayed Thursday till Sunday and not a Stag or Hen seen in Hotel . If they were about they were very quiet! Would return but next time try for a deal on a sea view

we had a terrible stay there. extremly worn out room, extremely bad bed and below average bathroom facilities. the only good-thing was the breakfast buffet, but it also wasn't much more than average. this hotel definitely doesn't deserve the hilton brand.

Dear Guest

Thank you for taking the time to add your review to Trip Advisor.

I am disappointed to read that your stay with us was not enjoyable due to your room not meeting your expectations. I can confirm that our ongoing refurbishment programme within the hotel will be carried on this year, and we are delighted this will see some of our older bed rooms and bathrooms refreshed and updated.

A recent family two-day trip to Brighton began with the disappointment of a small, dark and totally unsuitable room with a view out onto an enormous amount of scaffolding and noisy workmen. However after a quick complaint and removal request, we were moved immediately and without any quibbling to a far superior room on fourth floor. From then onwards a superb stay with only a couple of minor complaints - £16 a night for parking the car in unpleasant and dingy car park and only two very cheap and perfunctory biscuits on the tray in the room. Breakfast, swimmimg pool, bar and general ambience very enjoyable indeed.

Room Tip: Ask for a room without scaffolding outside.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to add your review to Trip Advisor.

The Hotel is currently undergoing a large scale 12 months external refurbishment program which is why a large amount of scaffolding is present. The works include the cleaning and repointing of the brickwork and implementing some pigeon proofing as well. The works on a daily basis do not involve working within a room and the hours worked by the contractors are managed by the Maintenance Team here, to ensure the least impact on our guests. We will forward all your correspondence to the External Company who are contracted to do this work for their own review.

I am delighted you and your family enjoyed the rest of your stay with us with your positive comments on our pool and the Hilton breakfast.

Regards
Guy

We stayed here in March 2011 and was more than a little disappointed with our stay :( The issues we raised, we brought to the Receptions attention after our first night, but there was no acknowledgement of our complaint and the issues continued - resulting in us leaving a letter on our departure - to no response a month later :( However, after posting a comment on Tripadvisor we did receive a response and the offer to go and try them again.

Having just returned from our 2 night stay, we can say "2nd time lucky." It is noticeable that they are going through a refurbishment at the hotel, which is a positive reflection. They have a FANTASTIC product and are clearly aiming to restore it to its former glory.

As per previous stay ... the staff and level of service they provide is fantastic :) Very personable, always smiley and "Hello's" from housekeeping to conceirge. Breakfast is always busy, food appears endless (a bit like hogwarts ... it appears!) and there is a fantastic variety for the continental and cooked (including vegetarian options.)

We were very happy with this visit and our room (which was 204), it was clearly a superior one to our previous stay and it was very much appreciated.

Brighton may have been listed in the Doomsday book, have been a favourite of the Prince Regent, and been one of the countries most popular holiday destinations of yesteryear, but times have changed and Brighton hasn't kept pace.

As for the Metropole, it too seems to be living on grandeur of days gone by. As others have mentioned, the regency architecture when you walk into the lobby is nice and check-in staff are friendly and process you as quickly as possible - probably out of necessity as once a queue builds up its difficult to get in through the revolving door due to the proximity of the check-in desk.

Once you exit the lifts on the guest floors it all looks a bit neglected. Chipped paint, poorly lit rooms, and room layouts that seem designed to frustrate - no sockets near the bed, so the only place for the bedside clock is on the other side of the room, 10 meters away if you end up in the 'Kingsize Deluxe' - would have needed eyes like a hawk to know what time it was.

Needn't have worried however as it was set to the wrong time anyway (4hrs too fast!). So if you ever need to change the time on one of these ubiquitous black 5 presets MP3-capable bedside clocks and can't work out how to do it, the secret is to lever off the top semi-circular section where all the preset buttons are and then you can see the little push button that allows you to correct it.

Flatscreen TV was perched on the minibar but the old TV cabinet was still sitting in a corner, broken and just looking like the hotel couldn't be bothered to spend the time and effort to remove it from the room and dispose of it.

Air conditioning was so hopeless they may as well save some electricity, 'go green' and switch it off. Others may have had problems during unseasonal heatwaves, but when its 14oC outside and you can't get the room below 26oC despite setting the air con to 18oC then you have to question its value. Clearly they know this is an issue as a 9" desk fan was in the wardrobe to help move the air around - but it too had to sit at the opposite side of the room to the bed due to the lack of socket, so was about as much use as a chocolate teapot.

Having said that, the bathroom was reasonable, had a nice clean shower and bath with plenty of hot water, and unlike the room, was well lit and well laid out. There had clearly been some repairs as evidenced by fresh grouting and some slightly mismatched tiles that were all easily overlooked but only served to highlight how poor the hotel room itself was.

WiFi access, like most hotels, is expensive and requires you to visit reception to get a access voucher before you can connect. £14 for 24hrs access, but if you want to use the WiFi for more than that, they you have to make return journeys to reception to keep collecting/buying access cards. In fairness, the reception staff did mention that it would be cheaper just to buy a £28 5-day pass direct from BT Openzone and use that, but that requires the hassle of setting up an account with BT etc. Also turns out it isn't a money saver - 5 day pass actually only allows you 33hrs of access over a 5 day period, not 5x 24hrs. Needn't have worried though, as the £14 access card I bought on day 1 actually lasted the 4 days I was at the hotel. I spent considerably more that 24hrs online during that time and even though the BT Openzone page was saying my session access had expired I was still able to view web pages, stream media and vpn into the office.

Breakfast was good, with a nice selection at the buffet, and the service staff were friendly and efficient especially considering how busy it was when I stayed - the hotel was hosting 2 meetings and it was the preferred hotel for an international conference being held at the Bright Centre. Evening bar meals were also reasonable quality if somewhat pricey and again the staff were courteous, efficient, and didn't interrupt unnecessarily.

The seafront location was reasonable, with access to the Prom and a lot of the visitor attractions within walking distance, for conference attendees, the main conference centre was a few minutes walk away, and there were plenty of pubs/restaurants in the area for post-symposia refreshments. Most of the town's main transport hubs were also nearby.

To be honest, I'm glad this was a business trip and I wasn't paying with my own money. I've stayed in Hilton's the world over, and had far nicer experiences at a fraction of the cost.

This hotel is probably not as good as other Hiltons, but was clean, convenient, well located. Steps from the pier and shops and tourist areas. I didn't try the breakfast so cannot comment. The wireless was expensive but this is probably typical for UK. Easy to get to by cab from the train station which in turn is easy to take from Gatwick airport.
