Hilton Brighton Metropole
Ranked #25 of 43 Hotels in Brighton
Reviewed 23 August 2012

Spent a weekend at the Hilton Metropole as it was the only hotel that would let us have 3 people in a room and would allow us to book for only one night (most have a 2-3 night minimum over summer). We had an amazing sleep due to the very comfortable beds, quiet rooms and blackout curtains. Our room was very large and well equipped. The hotel was in a good location for walking around Brighton. We arrived by train and it was a 10-15 min walk from the station. The reception staff were courteous. We did not eat in the Hotel as there are many good restaurants and cafes nearby. I would definitely stay here again.

Booked a short, lastminute stay at a reasonable price at this traditional style hotel located on the beach front. Reception staff were exceptionally helpful - although I got the impression the computer systems they used weren't necessarily aiding them that much - in getting us an ideal room. The room itself was very spacious with a large ensuite bathroom. The spa facilities generally compare favourably with other hotels I have stayed in, although the sauna was quite small, but then I was always the only one in there. Although I never used it the gym looked pretty well equipped.

The staff always appeared helpful and friendly. The breakfast was generally very good apart from firstly the egg situation - no choice except scrambled - and no staff present in "cook to order" station; and secondly the tea which was just terrible! (Use a decent tea brand, please.)

Family Discriminatory hotel. According to the online description of this hotel, a pool was provided. NOT FOR FAMILIES. This hotel has pool requirement times (discriminating for children under 16). I have mentioned this to management and indicated that false advertisement is not acceptable. We paid for the resources advertised and were clearly discriminated against because certain times were adult times. Well we are all human not only some stingy old folks who clearly should not be going to hotels but should go home if they want to use a pool in peace. KIDS ARE Human beings and a big part of LIFE... Pools are not just for men, women, young, old, they are for all human beings and if Hilton feels that kids are not worth sharing with, perhaps we should consider that Hilton hotels should not be considered as Family Friendly holiday experiences and not use them either!
My family and I just came from a Hilton in Maidstone before this one and it did not discriminate against kids. It was very nice and so was the service and personnel. Hilton hotels should have consistency in the quality and standards in all their hotels so customers will know what to expect from a "HILTON". Also, you should fix your garage door automated system. Calling to get out of a garage every day and waiting up to 15 minutes is not acceptable.

Room Tip: Choose another hotel with updated amenities that does not hate families staying there.

Rooms great. Food excellent but expensive. Great location. Excellent views if you have a sea facing room. Nice ambiance with period features. Car parking let it down a bit. Car park is undergroud and is dark with no direct access to the hotel which is a bit much bearing in mind charges made

Room Tip: Get a sea view room

Last week we stayed in the Hilton for 2 nights on a bed and breakfast basis in a sea view room. (This was a gift from our son.) The hotel is in a good location on the sea front and the hotel, itself, had an elegant feel about it. All the staff we encountered were very friendly and helpful.

Our room was very spacious and well decorated. The bathroom had a separate bath and shower cubicle with a good selection of, what looked and felt like, good quality toiletries.

We thought the breakfast was excellent – so much choice. (We can especially recommend the pork and leek sausages!) We loved the decor of the main breakfast room. On our second morning this was full and we have to go in to the ‘overflow’ breakfast room next door. We didn’t think that was as nice. It seemed a darker room as there was no natural light. (I think the windows may have been covered over with curtains.)

A couple of minor criticisms – the air conditioning in our room sounded very noisy and also the woodwork in the corridor on our floor (4) looked in need of a touch up as it was chipped in places.

Recommended.

I booked this from a Travelzoo deal, which one is always concerned may give you a lesser service. Judging by some of the other reviews about the afternoon tea, we weren't excluded from the poor service by voucher alone, and nothing has been done to improve the service since the last review lambasted it in May.

We were left standing in the bar for ages after initially bring directed to the lounge/bar, ignored and then finally seated in the darkest corner even though it was a bright sunny day.

My friend had rang the day before to let them know she would need a dairy free option, but nothing was known about this on our arrival. Obviously this meant an even longer wait for our food (20 mins).

When our food eventually came, they just took our champagne glasses away, and didn't even ask if we wanted any. When we asked about the tea, the waiter asked 'well, what do you want?' when we hadn't even been given a menu to choose. He then spent at least 10 minutes running around like a headless chicken, the inquiry for a tea menu having completely flumoxed him (he had to ask the manager in the end what to do). There are only 5 or 6 choices of very average tea.

The food was so disappointing, for a Hilton as well - the crusts were half cut off the sandwiches; the bread and scones were dry; the macaroon was dry and tasteless; the eclair was soggy and the cupcake was still cold from the fridge - which is a cardinal sin against cupcakes. None of us bothered eating it.

I have eaten a lot of afternoon teas in my time, but this was the most disappointing, not only from the food, but the complete disinterest from the staff. Needless to say we didn't tip. I would have felt even more angry about it if we had paid full price (£25), which is completely unjustified.

I have stayed here for the last six years for a business event. It has slowly improved bu there are still perennial problems, mostly revolving around air conditioning issues.

It comes as no surprise that Brighton in August can be hot, yet it always seems to catch out the air conditioning at this hotel, both in the rooms and the event space.

The staff and their responsiveness have improved hugely, especially over the last couple of years, but the rooms remain expensive for what we get.

Excellent breakfast though, and even better if you can eat outside as was available at the weekends.

If the a/c had worked would have given a fourth "star"!

Room Tip: You need to be very persuasive about ensuring you get a room with working air conditioning, if visit...
