“Brilliant staff & location, shame about the room!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 July 2014

To make the most of the sunshine, we drove to Brighton & decided to stay at the Hilton as we wanted a seafront location and a enjoyable stay. We are members of the Hilton Honours Club so know the high level of service and quality that the brand usually provides.

Unfortunately, we were given an refurbished room which wasn't up to Hilton standards- the décor was poor and an Ibis or Premier inn room would have made this one look shoddy and dated. Given the 135 we paid for the night, you expect a bit of luxury.

On our return from dinner, we discovered that the bathroom was extremely dated and the taps didn't work and the bath had chips in it. Our bath wasn't cleaned properly and there were hairs in it. We called reception and they swiftly sent someone to clean the bath and fix the taps (even though it was after 1am). They were really polite, knowledgeable and apologetic.

The breakfast was superb! So many options & friendly, attentive staff as always. We spent a 2nd night in one of the refurbished rooms- couldn't believe it was in the same hotel. Lived up to our expectations and we finished our stay on a great note. Great location, great food, superb staff, just request a refurbished room when booking.

Room Tip: Request a refurbished room.

Have stayed twice. The first time room was to the front, so we had a nice sea breeze. This year, we had a room on the other side, overlooking the air-con units, although there was no air-con in our room, the window did not open more than 2 inches (I think this is a H & S issue, rather than the hotel's), there was no cold tap water for either basin or shower/bath, and no fridge for bottled water (although there was an empty cabinet). It also seemed that the heating was on, I think there was a general problem with the heating/plumbing.

It was possibly the smallest hotel room I have ever stayed in (and I've stayed in 2* to 5*plus, as well as simple B & B's in houses).

A hotel such as this should be able to provide an on-site laundry service, bearing in mind the number of function suites it has, and the corridors should be clear of room rubbish before check-in at 3pm.

Having said that, the breakfast was wonderful, I enjoyed my swim, and the staff were friendly.

A solution with the windows could be to allow the upper sash to be opened for more air. I'm not normally a fan of air-con as it can be noisy and make a room too cold at night.

We were staying here because of a work function, so only had to pay for second night, as the first night was 'on the boss'. I would also add that I have managed to park in the hotel car park on both stays (many of my work colleagues reserved space in the NCP nearby). I don't usually agree with paying to park in an hotel car park, but on this occasion, due to problems caused by the storm in the early hours of Monday morning, our parking for the two days was free.

Overall I wouldn't stay here through choice, as it is a bit above my budget, but once they get all the rooms refurbished and provide consistent accommodation, it should be well on its way to its former glory.

Stayed here over the weekend...the first room offerred was so small there was hardly any space to move...not to mention the bed which sounds like a creakung building about to come down as soon as you sit on it..no no for couples who want to have a nice romantic passionate time than hear the bed go crazy..even the beds in down the road B&Bs are better. Then the hotel staff thinks they are some VIP and take their own sweet time to show rooms. Finally got an upgrade to a much better room but the bed was still similar. Ruined the night and the weekend.

Dont book this one based on just the Hilton brand..except the entrance..staircases and restaurant the hotel should be taken off the Hilton list. Probably a 2 star hotel being sold as 4 star because of Hilton brand. It was ironic that a dog on his stopped by the entrance to do its poo.

Stayed in Brighton for the weekend for a family event, the Hilton Brighton Metropole is in an excellent position on the seafront, and also near to the city centre, the amenities were excellent and the staff were extremely polite and helpful.

Most un-Hilton like experience. Had three rooms before accepting one then found air con did'nt work. Rooms tired, paint peeling from doors, furniture damaged. Couldn't turn lights off in first room. Breakfast not up to standard.

Situated in the beautiful city of Brighton on the coast, this hotel while on the waterfront and very grand in the open and public areas, is badly in need of a serious update. My single room while small, had no refrigerator, very bad plumbing and furnishings that I felt came from ‘the maid’s room’. No air-conditioning and whilst the window could be opened, this had to be closed because of the very nosiy motors outside running. Travelling as part of a ‘top rated’ tour group, I was surprised with the very basic condition of the room.
No wifi in rooms, only in public area. The Hilton Chain need to seriously rethink this service now expected by the modern traveller.

Dear Reviewer,

Thank you taking the time to add your review.

I was sorry to read of your disappointment on the standard of your room, the hotel will be starting another phase of bedroom renovations which will be carried through to next year.

In regards to the Internet not being complimentary, unfortunately the agreement is a national one for Hilton Hotels set by Head Office and not at hotel level, however we do offer complimentary WIFI code to our guest to use in our Waterhouse bar & terrace and lobby area, we also have a Internet station with PC’s which is complimentary for our guests to use.

Gorgeous historic building on the outside with a fantastic location...inside it's a different story, scuffed and dirty hallways, outdated deco and shabby furnishings. My room was at the back of the hotel on the third floor below which was a roof covered in air conditioning units on the roof below. They were in action 24 hours a day which meant opening the windows was no go. The wait at reception was long, no matter what time of day it was. There was rubbish loitering the corridors all day long (peoples empty take away and room service trays). Definitely not up to the usual Hilton standard, it's not somewhere I would like to go back to.
