“don't bother”
Reviewed 15 August 2014

Very rundown and very lacking, rooms don't look like they have even seen a touch of paint for many years, lacks the basics you would expect to find in a hotel in this day and age, you can find much better don't be fooled by the name of the brand.

I travel very frequently and am a Hilton HHonors Platinum member. I stay in hotels all over the place and very rarely ever complain. I'm accustomed to UK and European hotels having differences over American properties and comfortable with those differences. That being said, the Hilton Brighton Metropole, which bills itself as a five-star property is by the far the worst hotel I've stayed in in years, and this includes the occasional roadside style motel I have to stay in for business travel in out of the way places.

Upon check in, we were not greeted or helped with our bags. The room looks drab and dreary and the decor obviously hasn't been upgraded since the 1970's. The mini fridge was broken. The safe in the room faces the wrong way. The concierge seems to be overall absent entirely. Calling the front desk, the phone only gets answered every so often and you have to let it ring continously to get a response.

We were staying for 5 days and on one of those days, we went to visit relatives so didn't return until late the next day. Upon our return, we found that the previous day's breakfast dishes and cups hadn't been removed from our room and were stinking. None of the counter tops had been wiped off and other than the bed being made, it really looked like the room hadn't been cleaned whatsoever in two days.

I called the front desk and was informed housekeeping would be up. No apology, nothing. When housekeeping came up, they were very snippy and appeared to be inconvenienced by our request to properly clean the room and only did so with attitude.

Overall, I can't say how entirely disappointed and disgusted I am with this property. I stay in 5 star hotels and pay 5 star prices because I expect 5 star service. I'm more than understanding and reasonable about normal issues and short-comings, but this hotel is absolutely terrible. Please be VERY wary before you book a stay here.

Stayed for 2 nights with husband and teenage daughter. Sofa bed not really adequate for her age but only other room option was triple? Is a proper bed in a four star too much you get one at the premier inn! However sea view and king size bed. No wifi this isn't the dark ages and the hotel needs to move with the times. Beautiful grand building in common areas but rooms do need updating and as silly as it seems you don't expect budget toilet roll for that room rate. Staff pleasant and excellent breakfast. Car parking a bit expensive at £20 PER day especially when there's an ncp close by. Could and should do better Hilton but had good stay in Brighton.

Great location, friendly helpful staff, nice downstairs reception area. Bedroom was huge, view was great. Decor was dated and bathroom was tired, toilet roll was cheap and nasty, sounds silly but when you're paying good money for a room you don't expect 'value' items like that. Expected more from the hotel chain that it was. Shame really as everything else was great.

Dear Reviewer,

Thank you taking the time to add your review.

As you say the hotel is in good location, with all the attraction Brighton has to offer in easy reach.
Please accept my apologies for the disappointing toiletries. Your comments have been shared with our Rooms Divisions Manager to review.

The hotel will be starting another phase of bedroom renovations which will be carried through to 2015 and this will see some of our older bedrooms & bathrooms being added to the programme.

Visited the Metropole with a work conference and the service etc was very good, and the conference facilities were too. The hotel is quite grand and spacious in parts, but could do with a refresh. The room was disappointing - very tired and the air con did not work. Opening the windows for some air was tricky as there was a massive piece of equipment outside (possibly an air con compressor) which droned all night long. The bathroom looked like it hadn't been updated since the 1980s. I was temped to stay for convenience a second night, but at £180 it simply is not worth it. And finally, my big issue with Hiltons - they charge £15 for in room wifi. This should be free in 2014! what really annoys is that they wifi software keeps popping up, and making it difficult even to connect to my iPhone's hotspot.
Good location though, right on the sea side.

Room Tip: sea facing to avoid the drone of plant at the rear, which goes on all night long

In regards to the Internet not being complimentary, unfortunately the agreement is a national one for Hilton Hotels set by our Head Office and not at hotel level.

However I am delighted you found our team to be friendly and professional throughout your stay.

We stayed at the hilton during august at is busiest time, the hotel has a grand enterance and a very large grand looking building from the outside. The reception is a large area with many people to help you and to take your bags up to your room. The swimming pool is very good aswell it is heated, there is a jucuzzi, saina and steam rooms aswell as a gym.
The rooms are very spacious and I would reccomend the rooms woth sea view for the extra good experience.

Overall not a fault but I feel thay it is abit pricy for what you get, £17.50pp for breakfast

Fantastic building, friendly staff, and nice bar/atrium area. It's just a shame they forgot to spend any money on the rooms. Bad air con, a tv from the 1990s, dust in fairly obvious places, and a bathroom that wouldn't look out of place in the 1980s. Luckily here for only 2 nights but wouldn't recommend for longer stays. Can't see myself returning.
