“Good alternative to Travelodge”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 May 2013

This is not a first class hotel but if you are used to staying at the Travelodge just down the road it is a good alternative. When we were unable to get a room at the Premier Inn or Travelodge in the week after Easter I used hotels.com and found a double room here for a very reasonable rate that included breakfast. The room was clean although needed an update, the shower powerful and good toiletries were provided.
The hotel definitely falls in the 'Faulty Towers' range but has some charm lacking in the cheap chain brands. If you pay the full price for the room and breakfast I would call it a rip off but if you can get a deal it's fine for one or two nights. No elevator will definitely be a problem for some.
If the owners put some money and work into sprucing it up this could be a very nice place. Location is excellent if you want to be in the Preston Park area.
We are retirees and I can see that the hotel would not appeal to younger couples or groups of friends.

Room Tip: No elevator so ask to be on the first floor at the front.

A friend booked this hotel for me and a few chums for an overnight trip in Brighton - I was aware that the town centre hotels were busy and expensive so was relieved when he managed to get us in somewhere fairly close to town.

For a handsome price of £110 for a single room, I'd expected something half decent but sadly, that was not the case. From the hotel-wide creaky floorboards, to the 1970's bathroom (with its energy-saving zero pressure shower) to the noise from the adjacent main road that was barely reduced by the double glazing, it wasn't - it was rubbish.

The most amusing thing was the sign on reception that proudly stated that it was the most improved hotel (presumably its part of a chain) - a bit scary to think how bad it was before the improvements, maybe it didn't have a roof.

Suffice to say, I won't be returning

Room Tip: Try and get one of the rear of the hotel as it should be less noisy

As has been noted before, the exterior gives the impression of being an old people's home. On arrival we were immediately told our room wasn't ready (which we had already expected as we were early). When we asked if there was anywhere nearby to have a drink we were told there wasn't and the best thing to do would be to get on the bus to Brighton. The room was fine but we didn't have breakfast as there was nobody else in the dining room which didn't bode well. The meals advertised on the board in the entrance didn't look too appealing. There were also long waits at reception for keys especially at night. The bus service to Brighton was good but if I return to Brighton I would stay in the centre. Not particularly good value for money and sorry but I found the place quite depressing.

Great that you have a place to park the car & get around easy, but that all that is going for it really.
The English dragon at reception clearly doesn't care & I would recommend management either put her out to graze or train her on what customer service is all about. So rude. She was so unhelpful in tracking down at ironing board & iron & made doubly sure I knew I was paying for room only & breakfast wasn't included.
Rooms are adequate, food looked basic and was only of the bar snack variety.
All in all pretty poor. Would only return if I was desperate.

I stayed here last year. It was a disaster from the moment I stepped in, until I left the building. This was my first ever trip to Brighton, and I wish I had researched the hotels in the area before choosing this horrific place. On arrival, there was no one at reception - in fact there was no one to be seen downstairs, and I was left to 'admire' the wipeable plastic sofas in reception. Ten minutes of fun later, a receptionist finally arrived, who was rude and unapologetic for the wait. She demanded payment on arrival and no help was offered with my bags. The room was dated and dirty, with a stale smell of cooking oil. The mattress was hard and lumpy, but at least it encouraged me not to stay in the bed a second longer than necessary, and allowed me time to get drunk, to forget the whole experience. Breakfast consisted of greasy chips with a cooked greasy breakfast, but thank goodness for the Sainsbury's across the road - LIFESAVER. The evening menus were unfaceable, the choice was terrible and everything was delivered in a bowl, like I was a dog.

What a horrible place.

Room Tip: Stay in another hotel

Stopped in this hotel for one night, check in was adequate. Room was excellent with good shower, trouser press and the usual facilities you would expect. Very clean, let down by a missing door knob on wardrobe that would of cost very little to put right. Attention to detail!
