“Quaint with Character”
Reviewed 31 July 2012

I have stayed on many Mercure Hotels in different countries but this one is different from every other one. Previously an older traditional hotel the Accor Group have blended the old with the new in an excellent way. The rooms are all different, which is different in itself to a usual Mecure Hotel and the only main complaint was the lack of wi fi in rooms and air conditioning which, on a hot day, is a problem. But they were by the by for a weekend break.

Room Tip: Apparently the new block is nicer than the older block?

Dear robmarshall33

Thank you for taking the time to post your review following your recent stay at the Mercure Brighton Seafront Hotel.

I was delighted to read that you really enjoyed the character of the Hotel and highlighted that we are different to other Mercure Hotels you have stayed in before. Many of the Hotels within the Accor brand are owned and operated by differing companies and one of the key elements of the Mercure brand is that no two hotels are alike!

We do of course have some common standards and I was pleased to note that the development of the hotel from its original building and modern additions met with your approval.

Our Wi-Fi in the public areas is currently complimentary and we are continually reviewing plans to move from the hard wired access in the bedrooms towards a wireless solution.

Hopefully your experience on your last stay will give you encouragement to come back to see us for your next weekend break!

Thank you once again.

Kind regards

Matthew

We spent a weekend at this Victorian hotel to celebrate my birthday and greatly enjoyed. The hotel boasts an excellent location on the seafront within walking distance of the pier, the pavilion and the Lanes. Our second floor bedroom windows overlooked the promenade with marvelous sea views. The beds were huge and the bedding and towels were spotless. Old fashioned sash windows didn't open too far but let in the sea breeze and although air-con would have been good an electric fan was provided. Nice bathroom toiletries, bottled water and biscuits were additional touches not found in all hotels these days. The buffet breakfast was excellent and we were pleased to find that we did not have to up at the crack of dawn to get it! I would recommend the hotel and commend the staff - we will definitely go back!

Dear ElkieW
Thank you for taking the time and trouble to post the review of our recent stay with us.
A belated Happy Birthday from one and all at the team here!
It was rewarding to read that you enjoyed your Executive Sea view room and found it comfortable and super clean.
We are constantly looking at ways to add reasonable special touches for our guests so I was pleased that you appreciated the mineral water and biscuits!
I’m glad that you were able to have a relaxing morning before enjoying your breakfast and that the team here delivered the usual high level of service.
Thank you once again and we hope you will come back to celebrate with us soon.
Kind regards
Matthew

Stayed two nights as part of a wedding party and the reception was held at the hotel.

Staff – plentiful, efficient, nothing was too much trouble – they are a credit to the hotel.

Bedroom – windows opened only a few inches and we overlooked a very untidy, dirty courtyard of bins. Hotel is old and our bedroom floor went uphill and down dale. Clean but frankly basic facilities for a 4* hotel. Heated towel rail wobbled and at some time had obviously leaked and it could have done with some maintenance in clearing up the residue around the base. Biggest problem, at the end of the 2012 ‘summer’ week was lack of air conditioning in the bedrooms. Guests are supplied with a fan which only recirculates whatever temperature the air in the room happens to be.

Car parking – an issue, tight entrance/exit and few spaces for a hotel of this size.

Breakfast – excellent and again with plenty of helpful staff

Wedding reception – excellent, I wasn’t the only guest to comment on the food being served to 60+ people being hot, few hotels can achieve this with ease but the Mercure did.

All-in-all things were fine, lack of air-conditioning and Wi-Fi only available in the public areas being my main gripes for a 4* hotel. I believe the Mercure/Accor group have recently taken over this hotel so I hope refurbishments are planned. I was led to believe that the building is Grade 1 Listed so no doubt there will be restrictions.

Dear Clucket
Thank you for taking the time to post you most constructive and positive review following your stay with us attending a wedding.
Our bedrooms do vary in terms of size and appointment I am sorry that there was a maintenance issue with the towel rail in your bathroom as well as the temperature due to the mini heat wave we enjoyed last week.
Car parking is limited (throughout the City) and as a hotel we are fortunate to have our own spaces although I do appreciate that space in the rear car park is challenging.
We are Grade II listed as a building and we do have ongoing improvement plans for the Hotel, although Air Conditioning is a complex project due to the age and layout. Whilst we do have fans in all the rooms I am looking at alternative options that we might employ when we have the really hot days in the summer.
Whilst we currently provide complimentary Wi-Fi in the public areas this too is being reviewed with a view to extend (likely at a charge) to all bedrooms.
It was fantastic to read your positive comments regarding both the food you enjoyed at the Wedding Reception and for breakfast before you departed.
I was also delighted to read that the level of service was at our usual high standard and I hope that this outweighed your other feedback.
Thank you once again and we hope that we may see you again sometime soon.
Kind regards
Matthew

We spent a two night midweek break in what we can only describe as the most welcoming hotel we have stayed at. From check-in to check-out the service was first class. The staff made us feel 'individually' special and nothing was any trouble. Even during a false alarm fire, they ensured all the guests were okay and couldn't apologise enough. So, first class staff and service, yes the room was down a few wiggly corridors but it was spotlessly clean and the bed and pillows have to be the most comfortable ever. Okay so outside the veranda area may need a lick of paint, yes air-con would have been nice, but it still didnt affect our stay. Overall we think its the best value for money hotel in Brighton and will definately be visiting again and recommending it. As for the breakfast.... wow....totally awesome. Well done to all the staff, spotless room & excellent customer service .

Stayed here for 2 nights whilst in Brighton for a wedding on a prepaid B&B rate, which was excellent value. Check-in was friendly and efficient and my two separate bookings were merged, and I was offered a free glass of Pimm's. The hotel reception area is OK, slightly tired in places but pretty welcoming

The hotel has clearly been extended and my room was in the extension, in what they called the "mews rooms" - down a warren of corridors and up stairs. Then more stairs straight to the door! The layout was slightly quirky, with a couple of steps up from the door and bathroom to the bed and sitting area, where there was loads of space. The bed was two single mattresses on a king base, there was a TV and a shared balcony area. Loved it. Everything was also spotlessly clean.

The room was very hot (it is summer) but a fan was supplied. Unfortunately there are very few plugs in the room - really only one that is accessible - and that was a bit of an annoyance. A few additional plugs would be great, especially by the bed.

Room Tip: Some rooms have a sea view and although the hotel is at the quieter end of Brighton seafront, it may...

Dear darrenmcc
Thank you for taking the time to post a review of your stay with us.
I was pleased to read that you ‘Loved’ your bedroom in the ‘Mews’ – the layouts are far from usual which we feel is a welcome departure from the usual modern square rooms!
Whilst these rooms have been refurbished not so long ago I do take on board your comments regarding the availability of plug sockets. We do have multi extension leads available on request which can help when all the occupants want to charge today’s amount of electronic devices.
We had unusually hot weather last week and I hope that the fan in your room helped make your sleep a little more comfortable.
Overall I’m glad you had a ‘pleasant’ experience and we hope that you might be back to enjoy more Pimms and our service in the future.
Kind regards
Matthew

We arrived early and were greeted by a friendly receptionist who said we could check into our room early - which was nice as we'd walked from the train station (about 20 minutes walk). Our twin room was a little on the small side but had everything you need. The window only opened a fraction (old sash window with a drop outside so no doubt health and safety issues mean it cannot open further). There was a desk fan provided which we used the whole time. The weather was over 30 so we knew the room would be hot but the bathroom was like a sauna with no extractor. We booked on the summer deal and the glass of Pimms was a nice touch. Breakfast was in a large function room but the room was nice and cool and the buffet style breakfast was very good. Overall a nice hotel in a good location with friendly staff.

Dear Joe M
Thank you for taking the time to post your most valued review following your recent stay with us.
I was pleased to read that we were able to check-in to the Hotel when you arrived early and that you received our usual friendly welcome.
You are right that our risk management processes and focus on safety mean that all our windows are restricted to open to a limited level and I do appreciate that last week was unusually warm weather which meant the temperatures in rooms did increase. This said all of our bathrooms without windows are fitted with extractor fans which should come on after a time delay and I have asked my Housekeeping team to check each operation as they go around the Hotel on their daily duties.
For guest comfort and convenience at times we do use our elegant Ballroom as our secondary restaurant particularly for breakfast and I was also pleased to read that your thought this was very good.
Thank you once again for your positive review and we do hope we will see you sometime soon.
Kind regards
Matthew

We overnighted at this hotel before our son's graduation -so our needs were limited but we were delighted

The reception was friendly and welcoming
The room was a double fronted large room overlooking the seafront - not their fault that it was filthy boiling sea and the promenade was deserted!

The room was VERY comfortable with a small sofa, coffee table chair etc and very spacious.
Teamaking facilites, biscuits and lots of pampering botttles in the big en suite

A complete english breakfast in a pleasant room was a true pleasure -along with the small French boy who made himself completely at home! Rare to see French visitors in UK hotels -is it the strength of the Mercure brand that brought them?

I presume operational reasons meant that the hotel used a large dining room which did not have windows but had mirrored recesses which made it light and attractive. Perhaps at other times they use the other dining room which has sea views as well

We could not fault the staff at all -mainly very young but pleasant, efficient and friendly. I was easily able to leave a large bag behind for collection at the end of the day (no fee -I remember being charged for this at some so called leading hotels in Europe)

All in all I would thoroughly recommend this hotel

PS

Top tip for all Brighton hotels - please make your parking arrangments more clear -with the other parking constraints around the town this is a major consideration for visitors and should be a real selling point for those who have such facilities. It happened not to be an issue for us as we left our car at our son's flat, but in looking at options I felt this was overlooked by many hotels

In particular thank you for your very kind feedback regarding the service received.
Finally, thank you for adding the parking advice for future guests. We do try to be as clear as possible, especially indicating that parking with us is a reasonable £15 per night!
