So me andy partner decided to stay at Mercure for one night. We was greeted by pleasant and friendly staff who promptly showed us to the reception desk. Our room was located on the 3rd floor which was spacious but the decor and the minimalist approach was a significance disadvantage. In terms of decor it looks very, very old; similar to a Fawlty Towers episode. But we was only staying for one night so we wasn't to fussed.
We had breakfast at the hotel but was met by rude staff who was not overly helpful. With the room again look tired and worn. The buffet breakfast was good with ample choices.

The hotel is ok for a business trip but do not consider for a long stay.....it has so much promise though!!!

Eight months ago we started planning a four-week holiday to the UK from Australia. We planned to land at Gatwick Airport and then spend our first two nights (2nd & 3rd July) at the famous seaside town of Brighton. Our travel agent recommended this hotel. The image of the alluring facade looked very impressive and it suggested that polished Victorian decor and service ought to be expected within at four-star level – especially considering the steep tariff. The room was booked and paid for way back then.

Once we arrived and entered through the front door, however, it rapidly became apparent that the "facade" was just that - in every sense of the word.

The hotel is situated in a great location. The receptionist was very friendly. But that concludes the praise-worthy features of this hotel. The carpet and decor were very tired and worn “Parking? That will be an EXTRA 18 pounds every night, thanks. Take the lift or the stairs to your first-floor room. Breakfast is served from 6.30am.”

The lift - take your chances! It was very slow and worryingly unresponsive to repeated button pushing.

Our room - stank. No fridge. No air conditioning. The carpet, small bed, furnishings and decor were all old and tired and worn. Several lights were broken. Our filthy window afforded a view of a scaffolded building site.

The bathroom was grubby, tiny, broken and mouldy. There had obviously been numerous attempts at renovation and the final result was an eyesore. Only one towel. ("Oh, you'll find another one in the wardrobe". ???).

It was hot in the room. The window opened out all of one inch. A dusty, noisy fan was supplied to blow the hot air around.

Yes - we had fully paid for all these privileges eight months earlier. Was this REALLY a FOUR STAR hotel? They must be joking!

The toilet was squashed into a tiny recess next to the bath. Access and egress from the bath/shower was difficult because of the substantial height differential between the bath and the floor. Definitely a dangerous proposition for the elderly.

Wanting to start the day early the next morning, we arrived for breakfast at 6.30am as advised. But apparently that was most inconvenient for the morning staff because they had only just come on shift. We were made to feel very guilty for having arrived so early, and were told that we had to wait for the hot food. The young “waiter” at breakfast service was abrupt and curt. Basil Fawlty was well and truly present in spirit. The hot food wasn’t worth the wait, anyway, because it was all far too greasy. The toaster hardly toasted the bread at all and the coffee was ridiculously strong.

We spent much of the day discussing whether we should forfeit our second night’s accommodation and book in elsewhere. But it was high season and precious sightseeing time would have been wasted securing a room at another hotel. So we agreed to punish ourselves for a second night. Breakfast the next morning was no better. No welcoming greeting from the service staff again.

The most exhilarating part of our stay at the Mercure Brighton Seafront Hotel was checking out and leaving it behind.

I strongly suggest that the Mercure Brighton Seafront Hotel should demolish the entire incompatible mishmash behind its enticing but deceptive façade, and start again. Otherwise concede it only rates as a two-star hotel, and charge accordingly.

I am glad to report that our holiday in the UK has improved significantly, but first impressions are lasting, and we will be talking about our stay at the Mercure Hotel in Brighton for many years to come – for all the wrong reasons.

Room Tip: Our room was on the first floor. Avoid it like the plague.

Thank-you for taking the time to leave a review following your recent visit.

My apologies that you found a number of aspects of your stay to be unsatisfactory. Your comments are noted and further training has been carried out with the service staff in respect to breakfast.

Our ongoing improvement plan continues, we have recently finished the refurbishment of our Privelege rooms, replaced all of the beds in the hotel and refurbished the Ballroom.

Kind regards

Just spend one night there with my girlfriends as we were on our one of "the girlie nights out"
We struggle with parking, there is no enough spaces in the hotel car park. The rooms were so small and not very clean. I dont think this hotel deserves 4* at all. I agree with the others that the hotel is very overpriced! Ok it is a seafront but it is still a bit of a walk to get to the centre. Not worthy:(

Parking here in Brighton is challenging due to our city center location. The hotel only has 36 car parking spaces and these are available on a first come first serve basis and are chargeable at £18 for overnight parking.

We (my husband & myself) stayed at the Mercure over the weekend. The reception staff were really attentive and very friendly. We went into the bar before dinner on Friday evening and only one table was unoccupied behind a table of 6 hells Angels watching the football. They constantly swore and were quite loud, luckily another became available in the window, so we immediately moved. Our dinner was booked for 8pm as there was a large party in at 7.30pm. We received the menus, only to be told that a number of the dishes were off, obviously the large party had taken the other items. Surely they should have pre-booked their meals leaving some for the rest of the guests. On Saturday morning, luckily we were both dressed, the fire alarm went off. After spending approx 30 minutes outside we were told that a room had overheated?! We then decided we had better wait for breakfast until the Chefs had time to start over. At 10am some of the items were empty and the fruit had just about disappeared. The waiting staff, all but one, didn’t seem to know what they were doing. We requested tea for 2, got the cups and milk but no tea, so waited 10 mins and requested again. Then received a pot for one.
Having stayed at this hotel in Brighton twice before, rooms 159 & 161, we requested that we not have a room with patio doors facing the others as before. Previously we had to keep the curtain closed both times, as because of the good weather people were outside chatting and one lot – smoking. The family room we were given, on the fourth floor, was really hot and the window would only open a few inches. This meant we had to leave it open all night but had to suffer the noise of the traffic and the rain. No water or biscuits were in the room, as before, it also needs some paint and a new carpet. All in all not a good weekend. After staying at the Mercure in Sheffield, Fawlty Towers came to mind this morning…

Emma S,

I would like to thank you for your feedback following your recent stay here at the hotel.

I was delighted to read that the team you encountered were friendly and professional however, your stay did not fully meet your expectations like they have when previously staying with ourselves and for this I would like to offer my apologise.

I would also like to thank you for your co-operation on Saturday morning upon the fire alarms being sounded. I was pleased to note that the team ensured that the hotel was evacuated.

Upon making your next booking here at the hotel, I would request that you contact me directly and I can ensure that the best suited room type is allocated to you to best meet your requirements.

I thank you for your feedback.

Stayed one night, two hundred pounds disgusting price. Room was very small very hot, wasn't even sunny that day. Trouser press didn't work, asked for an iron twice before we got it. And it didn't get hot enough to work so wouldn't go there again.

Stayed at this hotel one night and think that will be it. Although we had a spacey room with terrace and sea-view on the first floor I don't find the offering in line with the price demanded: the TV didn't work properly, the shower was a bath tub with a shower curtain and a fixed shower head, and coffee machine without any coffee or tea (had to call room service to get this). Since I am on it, I didn't find the breakfast great (small crowded place) nor was the service anything I would appraise much. All in all, not bad but next time in Brighton I will look for somewhere else to stay for £250 per night.
