We booked for a sunny weekend in brighton and thought we'd try the mercure for a change. Wish we hadn't bothered. Our room on the first floor had very creaky floorboards, they were very tight with the teabags only 1 normal teabag !! shabby room and bathroom . went down to the bar there was a wedding reception being held, only one barman 1 massive queue to get a drink, went to reception to tell them but the man on duty wasn't very interested. next morning at breakfast saw on menu scrambled eggs looked for them on buffet but couldn't find any. asked waiter for them but was told that it was an old menu. brown sauce bottles were empty just a bit of a basil faulty farce. sat at our table for ages waiting for tea or coffee, gave up and went a found someone who begrudgingly got us some.
All in all very disappointed usually stay at the metropole shame they were full this time otherwise we would have stayed there.

Room Tip: ask for a sea view rather than facing a wall

We booked this place for a summer weekend and were really excited about the seafront location and the supposed four star quality. As it transpired, the hotel is halfway to Hove (we should shave checked the maps more closely), and it was a beautifully warm weekend - but our room had no air con and was hotter than a sauna - and only marginally bigger than a sauna at that. For £207 per room per night WITHOUT breakfast we were extremely disappointed. Not good value for money.

Neil R,

The team and I would like to thank you for taking the time to provide us with your recent online review.

The hotel is indeed on route to the Hove area of the city however, with the Brighton Pier only a 10 minute walk from ourselves the hotel is very central to all the Brighton has to offer and only a stone's throw from the beach.

The city has been experiencing the warmer weather this summer and to assist with this we have located a fan in each room. Additional fans are available upon request.

Our rates are in line with the market for the area and I would like to apologise that you feel this did not meet your expectations.

Kind regards,

Ms Kuldeep Badesha

We visited Brighton 2 days after our wedding and booked a standard room, sending a polite email to reception asking whether there was anything they could do to make our stay memorable.
We checked in - no mention of the email, no congratulations and no offer of help with luggage to our room way back in the depths of the modern extension at the back of the hotel.
Room were bog standard "Premier Inn" quality with no character, despite the assertion on the website of Victorian Charm.
No aircon (which previous managers comments on here have blamed on the "Listed Building" status which is bizarre as this wing of the hotel is decidedly 80's in feel.
The only way to get air into the room was to open the patio doors meaning a direct view into the room opposite some 10 feet away. Being on the ground floor this also presented a worrying security problem.
We'll forget having to get up and go down to reception at 6.45am on our first morning because the hotel was struck by lightning, but it's harder to forgive the fire alarm going off at 7am the next morning and having to evacuate the hotel to stand in the car park with no apology.
In summary, a half decent hotel with few personal touches making for a tiring and disappointing stay

Halfwayboys,

Myself and the team would like to thank you for taking the time out to provide us with your online review.

I would like to apologise that you feel the hotel did not meet your expectations. Although your room was located in the Mews Area of the hotel, the Grade 2 listed building status that the hotel has does dictate what the hotel can do in terms of things such as air conditioning we are continuing discussions on what the hotel can do to add to the hotel in terms of facilities and character.

I would like to thank you for your patience over the course of last week in terms of the fire alarms being sounded. Upon the fire bells being sounded the hotel is required to evacuate until the hotel is deemed as being safe to re-enter and until investigated we are unaware of where this has been activated or why. I was pleased to note in the feedback that I have received from all guests during this time that the team undertook the evacuation process in both an efficient and timely manner upon the fire department arriving at the hotel and giving us the all clear.

I would like to once again thank you for your feedback.

Kind regards,

Ms Kuldeep Badesha

The hotel is in an excellent location on the beach and within a 20 minute walk to "The Lanes" and Brighton Pier. It is an older hotel so some areas look a bit worn, particularly the halls, but the rooms have been renovated and are clean and in good condition. Breakfast was excellent with good choices and service.

The one glaring exception was attention to a problem we had with the toilet not flushing properly. We tried to phone down for service twice and after our calls not being answered we went to the front desk, advised them of the problem and left for the day. On returning late, the toilet was still not repaired. Since we were leaving early the next morning we left it at that. Obviously unsatisfactory service for a pretty vital area.

We stayed in a room that looked lovely,we were so pleased we had a balcony, an iron, a bath and a shower. We all headed down to the bar before going down to regency (which is a fantastic restaurant) when we arrived back to the hotel we came into the room and realised we had NO air conditioning, it was an oven the room had a fan but circulating hot air wouldn't help so we opened the balcony door although as we got home late we only had it open for a short period of time cause we had to shut it for security reasons. Anyway it was a nice hotel just needs air conditioning.

Room Tip: Ask about air conditioning

Ellie D,

Myself and the team would like to thank you for your feedback.

The hotel has various room types available and the sea view balcony rooms are a favourite with our guests - for a small supplement per night it's a great way to see some of the sites of Brighton from the comfort of your bedroom.

We look forward to welcoming you back soon.
