“Christmas 2013.”
Reviewed 3 January 2014

We booked the Courtlands Hotel for a Christmas break for ourselves and our daughter. We were very pleasantly surprised by all that was on offer. We found the staff friendly and polite, our rooms were spacious, clean and comfortable, but a little dated, the bathroom had everything we needed but the shower was weak on pressure. The rooms were too warm for us as were the corridors, but turning the heating off and opening the window sorted this.
The food was outstanding and the choice on the menu superb. We felt we had good value for money for our Christmas stay and would recommend this hotel. It was an ideal location for exploring Brighton and Hove, both of which have a lot to offer.

This was a really well balanced and thoughtful review which is much appreciated and has finished off the Christmas break in some style. Victorian buildings have their special ways and the heating is always something of a balancing act but thank you for taking such a pragmatic approach

Hopefully we can see you back from Manchester before too long and all the very best for 2014 meanwhile

I'm always put off when hotels ask for payment up front, as Courtlands did. My room was advertised as a double room when I booked through laterooms.com, but I was only given a single room (albeit for only one person). The bed creaked, which was annoying and the room itself was next to the lift (I can't remember the number though - single room on the second floor) which meant I could hear guests or staff coming and going.

I wasn't given the wifi code, but I didn't ask for it either. There's no plug obviously near the kettle, so you have to boil water with it on the floor near the door, which isn't ideal.

The room and bathroom were clean, but the shower didn't have much going for it pressure wise.

Overall, the experience wasn't bad per se, but it was definitely not value for my money. Lots of little things detracted from my visit rather than any one event.

Something of a mixed review which is of course disappointing as the Courtlands strives to offer value for money and continues to invest in the fabric of the hotel

The WIFI code is printed on the guest registration card tear off slip which is given to every customer upon check-in. The WIFI is complimentary and offers a robust and fast broadband service with no down load restrictions

I asked the receptionist if the TV in the bar/lounge had Sky Sports; not alone did he not know but gave the impression that he could not care less! Luckily the owner was around and he confirmed that they had S/Sports. The bedside lamp was not working in Room 308 - surely it is rudimentary for staff to check basics when preparing the room. There is no information booklet in the rooms telling one what services are available [ including TV!! ] - this would be helpful and in keeping with good practice. I normally stay at the sister hotel , Landfords, which I liked much better. J.McCarthy

An overall rating of two does not reflect the underlying scores awarded by this guest and it is naturally disappointing their stay was somewhat mixed. We are currently training our newest receptionist who has only been with us a very short time

Our housekeeping staff take their responsibilities seriously but light bulbs will inevitably blow and always at the wrong time. This is frustrating for all concerned

We appreciate Mr McCarthy is a regular visitor to Hove and value his custom

Stayed here for 1 night as originally booked at their sister hotel the Langfords, only to get a phone call saying the Langfords was closed and they would book us into the Courtlands hotel for the same price, first impressions: the reception area is very welcoming and that's where the good bit ends, we went to the bar, drinks very expensive ( even for a hotel) my drink tasted of detergent so I asked for another one, the barman was not happy saying my drink was fine, it wasn't, he served me with another one which tasted fine. I figured the first glass hadn't been rinsed out propaly. After he tipped the first drink away he proceeded to charge us for the replacement, well out of order. My husband left his very expensive bottle of lager as it tasted off, the barman didn't say a word. When we eventually found our room we couldn't get the door open so had to go back down to reception to get help, after a while the barman came with us to the room he struggled to open the door but eventually did it. The room was okay, very basic but clean, the bathroom had nothing at the window and I felt very conscious when taking a shower ( which was pathetic) we were overlooked by a very large block of flats and felt very exposed. I didn't sleep a wink, the mattress was so old and soft and the bed was very small, my husband is 6ft 3" and a good size build, every time he moved I either rolled to the centre or to the outside edge, it was the most uncomfortable bed I have ever tried to sleep in, they really need to invest in some bigger beds and good quality mattresses. We also figured that if they turned the heating down in the corridors ( it was stifling) they would save loads of money. In the morning we checked out, the guy on the desk was pleasant enough but was more concerned with checking that we didn't owe anything, as we paid in full on arrival, which I now realise that they do this because of complaints. His only comment to us was: no you don't owe anything, have a safe trip home and that was it. I think the management need to undertake some staff training, the hotel was very quiet so why weren't we give one of the 'newly refurbished rooms" instead of a very tired room. and also take a leaf out of the Lanfords where we stay on a regular basis. Based on our experience we would not stay at this hotel again, unless of course it improves a lot.

Room Tip: Ask to have a refurbished room when you book.

There is not too much we would wish to say about this review as it does not present an accurate or balanced picture of the Courtlands. Indeed, the staff have found the sentiments expressed disheartening [especially at the Festive time of year] given their individual and collective endeavours and the ongoing moneys being invested in the hotel. It is also fair to say the issues regarding the room were not raised at the time which would have given us the opportunity to see if another suite were available

We originally booked the Langfords, no where on the website did it say it was actually closed over the Xmas period! We then get transferred to their sister hotel…… The Courtlands!

We were greeted by unhelpful and unfriendly staff on arrival and that remained consistent throughout our stay! The room was outdated, the bed was uncomfortable and squeaky and the shower head was black with limescale! The shower limply pointed down the plastic DIY box that was the cubicle and we were forced to hold the shower head in one hand whilst trying to catch the drips to wash!

Brighton is a lovely place and even though in winter the weather wasn't great it faired better than the hotel!

As with many properties in the South East the Courtlands was also affected by weather related issues over the last few days and as such we find this review to be lacking in goodwill and balance

At no time did the guest make their concerns known which would have allowed us to see what other rooms were available. Both our housekeeping and reception staff are naturally saddened by the comments which do not ring true

The Courtlands has a great deal to offer which our regular guests know. Apart from its location, there is a complimentary super fast guest wifi, free parking and some cracking Christmas food

I don't ever write reviews but I don't understand why this hotel has so many bad reviews.

Us 4 lads all stayed here for a night out in Brighton, the hotel was great and clean, the staff were friendly and went out their way to help us. Ok the bar is a little expensive but most hotel bars are. Our room was huge and very clean. Car park was free which is a big bonus for the sea front. Simples!

If you are looking for a local hotel to the clubs and bars and not after the ritz then I'd defiantly recommend this hotel.

What a way to start the week and thank you so much. Really pleased you had such a good stay

Sure the Courtlands remains an ongoing labour of love in terms of the work we are doing to further improve the property but the staff are committed and it enjoys a superb location and guest parking

We agree some of the reviews here are nonsense but yours is top draw. Hopefully you can visit again from Kent very soon

Renewed thanks
