This is a lovely grand old hotel right on the waterfront at Brighton. Our room was very clean and comfortable. The hotel has some great lounge areas where you can relax with a drink and enjoy the views of the beach and pier.
The only glitch in our stay was a problem with the plumbing in our bathroom; the shower wouldn't work and the toilet stopped flushing! As it was the middle of the night it couldn't be fixed immediately but the staff were very good and offered us another room but as it was so late we declined and accepted the use of a bathroom in a neighbouring empty room instead.
Despite the plumbing problems, I would happily stay there again.

Stayed at the old ship on a mid week break via Travel Zoo, as this type of hotel is usually wat out of my budget. The hotel itself is rated four star but my travelling companion who stays in many top starred hotels felt it was only worthy of a three star.
Really nice hotel and the staff are friendly and more than happy to help - hotel was a little cold and we over heard several people complaining of the cold. Reported this to reception and a heater was brought to our room immediately.
The buffet breakfast spread is lovely with an amazing selection but the hot plate breakfast lets down itself down for a four star hotel.
Like all mass produced breakfasts left in a hot plate for guests to help themselves to, it was generally like warm and not particularly enjoyable but don't get me wrong, the cold buffet more than makes up for it, although a little disappointing for a man like himself who sees a cooked breakfast as a real treat when staying in a hotel.
Kind of also feel for a four star hotel that the canteen style approach to the hot break fast maybe not what people used to staying in a four star hotel would expect. If I was paying full price for this hotel I would rather not have to Serve my own hot breakfast, yea and coder and make my own toast
Another point is the hotel advertises free wi fi in all rooms but this was not available in my fifth floor side room. If you ate definitely going to need wi fi I would stress this when booking your room.
Over all this was a nice stay in a nice hotel. Without the travel zoo deal I would question the value but other than that I would recommend

This is a lovely historic old style hotel with fabulous lounge areas with open fires and views to the ocean. We stayed two nights and had a superior room, it was on the Ship St side of the building with views over the street. The room itself was quite small as you expect in this type of hotel, but it was very comfortable. Bathroom a good size with shower over bath. The breakfast room was very nice with sea views, a good buffet breakfast, great spread of hot and continental options, excellent service from staff. The hotel is about 10-15 minutes walk from the railway station and 5 minutes to Brighton Pier, access to The Lanes and cultural quarter is very easy directly behind the hotel. The only problem we experienced was noise both nights, being woken at 2-3am from noise from the hotel patrons from the nightclub in Ship St. We had read about this on other trip advisor posts but had thought it was probably more on weekends, we were there however on a Tuesday and Wednesday and it still was a issue. Our room was on the top floor, closest to the front (so the furthest away from the nightclub), it might be best to ask for a room on the other side of the hotel.

A well appointed hotel, marvellously comfortable. I didn't use the hotel car park: despite the website saying that the charge is for 24 hours, it isn't: you have to be out by 12.00 (although an extension can be arranged "subject to availability"). The staff were friendly and breakfast was very good indeed with plenty of choice. My room was large and clean, the bed very comfortable. Yes, there is some noise from outside, particularly around the fish and chip shop on the opposite corner of Ship Street, but I never found it intrusive.

We had 2 nights in one of the redecorated rooms which was a decent size, comfortable and quiet.
The public areas away from the reception are are however faded and I wonder what would happen if there was ever a fire there. It is a warren and not very clearly signed. Also the lift must be an antique and crowded with 3 people in it.
Breakfast was a highlight although the hot dishes were getting cold, even at 8am. The staff were friendly, but being charged £23 per night to park a car is extortionate.
All in all a pleasant stay but nothing to rave about.

Room Tip: The best rooms are a little more expensive but probably worth it.

We booked into this hotel having decided to stay in Brighton for one night. We were charged an astronomical price for a supposedly superior double. The room had obviously been recently refurbished however the windows were not double glazed and the noise overnight was horrendous. I realise that the hotel can't control what happens outside, but as they must be aware of the night time partying perhaps prospective guests should be warned and the price adjusted accordingly. The bed was however very comfortable so lying awake all night was a better experience than it could have been! just another little comment...the sheets were too small for the bed.
The staff were indifferent and the carpets in the public areas were dirty. Squashed chips in the lift didn't enhance the overall look. I would never stay here again.

Thank you for your review.

I am sorry you were disturbed by noise from outside. As part of the hotel is listed and within a conservation area, standard double glazing cannot be installed. We are currently applying for planning permission for alternative windows and hope to hear soon.

So partner and I decide to do the one thing we always wished to do.. a luxury romantic brighton weekend. Browsing for a decent hotel?, do not be fooled by the 4 stars or the posh interior.
A seaview, ensuite, double room with exclusives where we could supposedly order room service and enjoy breakfasts and dinner.
Think again, our just about sea view box room with messy decorating, unsafe handrails in the bathroom shower, phones that disallow you surprising your loved one with room service breakfast and being challenged in the restaurant in front of other guests for meals you have previously paid for.
If you want all of this included in your holiday experience of beautiful brighton, choose this hotel and see your dream stay shattered.
Feel incredibly let down and disappointed in this hotel.
Only positive point here is that its close to the town and beach.
Enjoy!
