“Pleasantly surprised!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 March 2014

We felt we were taking a bit of a risk booking this hotel after reading previous reviews. We found a dinner, bed and breakfast rate that we felt was very good value, so decided to chance it.

We weren't disappointed. We booked one of the refurbished rooms. The room was a lovely size and pleasantly decorated. The bathroom was small, but adequate. The refurbishment didn't appear to have extended into the bathroom as the taps and shower head etc had signs of limescale and wear.

Dinner in the restaurant was good. The menu was a traditional menu. Buffet breakfast was also good. The selection of fresh fruit and pastries could have been
better, but I'm being picky now!

We arrived at 16.30 and found the hotel car park was full. Reception advised us to try the Lanes NCP car park (the entrance to which is directly opposite the Hotel's car park entrance). We had no problem finding a space in there. It is worth noting this car park is not only adjacent to the hotel, but also offers a special "hotel stay" rate. If you arrive after 16.00 and depart before 11.00 the following morning the charge is £10. The hotel car park currently charge around £22 and the NCP charges £24 for 24 hours.

We had a weekend stay here. Lovely clean reception area and staff at check in were friendly and helpful. The room was clean and tidy and looked like it had been recently refurbished. Had a lovely meal in the restaurant where the staff were very efficient and food was great. Enjoyed the breakfast buffet in the morning and again the lady in charge was keen to make sure we knew where all the various foods were and made sure we had a lovely window seat looking straight out towards the beach. Would definitely stay here again.

16 Members of our party stayed with you and I understand from their feedback that they had a sublime experience during their time with you. Well Done all staff were very friendly and acquiescent at all times, going that extra mile to help in any way they possibly could. Thankyou all for making our stay truly terrific.

We visited the Old Ship with our 3 year old. We stayed in one of the rooms that hadn’t been refurbished yet, that said, the room was light, clean and really well presented and we had a seaview. Staff at the hotel were very helpful and welcoming throughout. Breakfast the next morning was faultless, there was full hot breakfast buffet which was piping hot and fresh at all times as well as the full range of continental options, our little boy who is vegetarian helped himself to a muffin, then cereal, then scrambled egg on toast. The location of the hotel is brilliant, we checked our car into the car park and explored all of Brighton on foot no problems, would definitely stay here again.

We had a lovely time in The Old Ship Hotel in Brighton. It was a special birthday for me and although it seemed a little expensive when we booked the overall experience was worth it and we will be back. Thank you.x

We stayed at the Old Ship for a Saturday night, check-in around 3:00pm was abysmal, disorganised and chaotic...they appeared to be catering for a conference and were woefully unable to cope with large numbers checking in, and appeared to be short of staff.
The hotel is without doubt, large and spacious with rooms to match, which are clean with nice decor and a large bathroom with lashings of hot water. However, the room had old tatty windows, although the whole side of the hotel appeared to be undergoing a facelift and replacement windows, as it had ugly scaffolding along its length, faced off with green netting which whipped furiously in the wind all night...it would have been nice to be forewarned.
The 6 scatter-cushions on the bed were badly stained and covered with lipstick and makeup, I asked for them to be removed as we went out to explore Brighton. On returning to the room, there was a small box of chocolates in their place (a nice touch)
The night was spent watching the ceiling and listening to the drunk foul mouthed revellers; screaming, shouting and abusing each other until 07:00 in the morning. DON'T GO TO BRIGHTON FRIDAY/SATURDAY it appears to be the stag night/hen party capital of the South.
Interesting to find packets of ear plugs in the bedside draw in the morning, along with a card advising patrons of their usefulness in shielding "City Noise" to aid a good nights sleep.
Such a pity the hotel website fails to advise patrons of the fact that the place is so noisy they provide ear plugs ! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED !
Breakfast time sees you bing introduced to a "lovely breakfast" by the restaurant manager....it is undoubtedly lovely, plentiful, varied, well presented and worthy of being called a "lovely breakfast"
Overall a disappointing experience which won't be repeated unless the rooms are soundproofed !

Dear Reviewer

Many thanks for your review.

All websites state that the scaffolding is currently up along ship street affecting all superior rooms.

New windows are being installed now that planning permission has been agreed after several years of trying.

Arrived on a Friday, staying 1 night.
Parked the car at the hotels covered car park. Friendly greeting and the gent valet parked it for us (although at £23pounds until midday on Saturday and 2pounds after, for paying guests, I found a bit much).
Warm greeting in the well decorated lobby and reception.
Great sea view room. Lovely size, even the bathroom, which at some hotels can be a little on the small side.
Had our evening meal at 8pm.
Great choice and the food was of great quality and served hot.
Didn't fancy dessert, as we had eaten out late during the day, but the dinner staff said we could take them to the room if we wished, which was a nice touch.
All in all, a great stay.
Would definitely come back to such a great located hotel.
Ignore some of the negative reviews here, which can only have been written by 40+ grumpy women... :D
