“What a shame”
Reviewed 29 April 2014

The Old Ship is located on the Brighton Sea Front main road, near most things one wants to do or see in Brighton.
The first room offered smelt of paint.
The second offered was on the first floor and was too near the road.
The third room (which we accepted) was on the top floor. However, during the night, this proved VERY noisy because of the disco (somewhere) and the (literally) screaming drunks on the pavement which were clearly audible well past 2 o'clock in the morning. Because of the noise, we were compelled to keep the windows shut. As there is no air conditioning, the room was too stuffy. The shower was somewhat feeble.
The hotel itself is nice, though getting to some rooms with suitcases is "interesting".
The staff are superb - friendly and helpful.
The restaurant equally excellent - good choices, nicely presented.
However, the issue of noise allied to the lack of air-conditioning made the experience one we would rather forget.

Dear PeterM42

Thank you for your review.

I am sorry you were distrub from noise from outside the hotel. Being an historic hotel, unfortunantly air conditioning is not available and location of some bedrooms can be interesting to get to.

Kindest regards

Stayed here with my wife and our 2 dogs for one night. Friendly service, good value, dogs well provided for with dog beds and bowls. Handy car park under cover round the side, very friendly and helpful car park attendant. Very convenient for the Lanes and the beach. We didn't eat in the restaurant in the evening but the hotel arranged a taxi to take 4 of us + 2 dogs out to a restaurant in Hove. Breakfast was self service but plentiful. Staff in reception, bar and restaurant all really good.

Room Tip: Sea view is good, but I think larger rooms are available at the back without the views.

Always a pleasure to visit this 'time warp' hotel. No plastic nor glitz, exudes character, placed in the best location and hosted with brilliant staff and management. Cannot rate too highly in my book.

Great hotel, clean, tidy, staff are great, welcoming you from the moment you walked through the door. The evening meal in the restaurant was very nice and service excellent too. Breakfast is a buffett and lots of it, we had a lovely lady welcome us to the restaurant. Rooms were clean and a good size, the added extra of Ear Plugs is a definate bonus, as Brighton is noisy during the night with party goers and wind and sea. overall a fantastic location and hotel to stay in.

Well just home from a four day stay at this hotel. We were greeted at reception who although they let us check in early , the service was poor, the receptionist gave us incorrect advice about how to pay and also said breakfast was served till 11am - he seemed not to understand english very well. We went for breakfast just after 10am next morning only to be told it finished at 10am. However as other guests were also arriving one of them inisisted we were served breakfast due to the cock up at reception. The wee lady who checks you in for breakfast was sooooo brilliant with us all and immediately arranged for out breakfast to be plated up quickly. She was so fantastic so friendly and funny and sang us wee songs at breakfast each morning. What a cheery wee soul luved her! Although great selection for breakfast the hot selection was only luke warm and could have been hotter. The coffee served from the machines at breakfast was totally disgusting so i stuck to tea each morning. The hotel room was a refurb one and was beautiful, the bed was prob the comfiest bed i have ever slept in. However and it is a BIG however the noise from the squeaky lift was VERY VERY ANNOYING, was constant throughout day and at night ke;pt us from sleeping. That together with the noise from outside (ear plugs are provided but i cannot sleep with anything in my ears!!) was so bad, esp the noise from the beer garden form hotel du vin next door which is open all night meant that i did not sleep well for the duration of my stay. Hotel should really look at replacement windows or something to keep noise at minimum!! The other wee niggle that im sure could be easily fixed with a draught excluder is the big gaps at the bottom of the doors including the main bedroom door u could see out to the corridor at night and lots of light came into room. i put jackets at the door to stop draught and noise. Location of hotel is fantastic right on seafront and 2 mins from pier. Unfortunately although nice hotel I could NOT stay here again as having a good sleep is an important part of a good weekend. NOTE ---PLEASE PLEASE FIX THE SCREAMING LIFT!!

Dear Scotsbro

Thank you for your review.

New parts are on order for the lift to resolve the squeeking. Unfortunatly as they are nearly 70 years old the parts take time to source.

New windows are also being installed to all our superior rooms at present.

Kindest regards

Well just home from a four day stay at the hotel it was fantastic only a few wee niggles . We where greeted bye very friendly staff who let us check in early even though only one of two rooms where ready at the time they radioed housekeeping to have the other cleaned as a priority great customer service .The bar restaraunt area is lovely food was fab and the lady who checks you in for breakfast is fantastic so friendly and funny and keeps all the staff organised. The hotel room was a refurb one dont get peoples complaints about scaffolding then complain it needs work this is why the scaffolding is there and it did not bother us at all the room was clean and beds very comfy .Now for the wee niggles the noise from the squeaky lift did become a little annoying especialy at night and our friends room where even closer to the lift was worse. The other wee niggle that im sure could be easily fixed with a draught excluder is the big gaps at the bottom of the doors including the main bedroom door u could see out to the corridor at night i put the cushions at the door to stop draught and noise but all in all i had a fab time and would return the staff are fab so friendly and helpful and the location is fantastic i think some people just need to give it a chance to fix the wee niggles .
