We stayed at this hotel for a weekend break in November in a circular sea facing room, booked through Mr & Mrs Smith. The reception is very good, the staff look after you and make sure you can park somewhere although this may not be directly in front of the hotel.
First surprise was no lift -this meant lots of stairs as we were on the top floor.
Room was nice but not worth the price - furnishings would have been decent ten years ago but were clearly starting to date. The desk chair was faded from the sun and some other bits were starting to look a little worn.
We had a room with the bath in the window, the main bathroom is therefore quite small and dingy and also looked dated.
No wardrobe - this room had a kind of wall curtain which revealed hanging 'space' - don't bring a lot of clothes though if you are staying in this room as there isn't much space. The room did feel quite small for the price and at night another little suprise was the window noise. These are sash windows with wood panel covers, no curtains and let quite a lot of noise through, as you're directly above the main coast road, this was quite noisy - and this was in November. Overall this hotel felt like it had seen better days, was reasonable standard , has a good bar and great staff , but was over-priced.

Room Tip: Sea view rooms can be noisy

Is Drakes Hotel bad? No, definitely not. But is it what you would expect when you read all the reviews (and see the room rates)? No, no really. The hotel really doesn't have that "wow" factor.

Our disappointments:
- very small rooms
- contemporary design yes, but a bit dated and showing signs of wear and tear

On the positive side:
- comfortable bed
- good location on the sea front
- friendly staff

In a nutshell, the hotel is in need of some renovation to bring it back up to standards of a 4* hotel.

Just returned home from a wonderful nights stay. Would recommend to an couple looking for romance.

The staff are very helpful and friendly.
We stayed in room 404 (upgraded with thanks) great views of the sea and pier from the bath tub, and the breakfast in bed was something else.

Look forward to returning next year.

We stayed at Drakes recently and had a wonderful time! The staff are lovely and the rooms are fabulous. The bed was so comfortable that I fell asleep in minutes which is very un-usual for me! We ate in the restaurant downstairs and the food was so good, by far one of the best restaurants in Brighton. I was a little put off before we arrived at some of the reviews I saw on here, but we had already booked and thought we would decide for ourselves. I was very pleasantly surprised.

From the moment we arrived to the moment we left nothing was too much trouble for the brilliantly attentive staff. They genuinely care that you have a nice stay. Rooms are fab-standard room not huge but well equipped and bath in the room, nice touch. If you can splash out get one of the big sea view rooms. Would definitely go back.
