“take earplugs”
Reviewed 1 November 2013

We have just returned from a 2 night midweek break at this hotel in a supposedly superior double room with sea views. We had the sea views but there was nothing at all superior about it. It was tatty, old fashioned and noisy. Single glazed windows with rotten frames made for a very noisy night, where we had to buy earplugs for our 2nd night. The curtains which didnt even fit the windows were also moving on there own due to the draughts coming through ! It was a very uncomfortable tiring 2 nights and I would not recommend this hotel to anyone !

Room Tip: Just don't go !

This hotel has apparently everything going for it! It is well-placed (opposite the Brighton Wheel, just along from the Pier), has free WiFi and, in the superior room we had, a well-appointed and comfortable bedroom with a fabulous sea view. The window is single-glazed, however, so the street noise was readily apparent.
However, staying on a Saturday night, it also hosts a night club. If only we had read other reviews before booking! We were in room 124, next door to James M's room, and the noise was intolerable. Unfortunately, the hotel was full, so we could not be moved, and had to endure the noise until 3am. We did manage to get some compensation, since the room was more expensive than an equivalent Premier Inn, but I would advise anyone to certainly avoid the first floor at the weekend, unless you are a night owl.

Room Tip: Avoid the first floor rooms - higher up could be quieter.

Stayed for 3nights clean comfortable and value for money defiantly worth a visit and would go back great location opposite the wheel and pier and 10mins from central locations and attractions didn't have breakfast room only.

We've just spent last weekend (4-6/10/13) at this hotel. Arriving on Friday around 10:30pm, the club was in full swing and we were unlucky enough to find ourselves in room 125. This is directly above the dancefloor and the music was very, very loud until it stopped around 3am. At this point, thanks to the single glazed sash windows, we then had the perk of listening to the merry clubbers arguing on the pavement outside for another hour. All in all, not a great combination, particularly for our 4 year old daughter and 4 month old baby. Come Saturday morning, we were ready to cut short our stay and go home. By this time, the reception desk staff had changed shift and the lady on the desk could not have been more helpful. She apologised profusely, moved us to room 325 and provided a free bottle of wine in our room. On Saturday night, we could barely hear the club music or revellers, so the location of the room makes all of the difference.

Other observations from our stay are;

- Parking is very limited (not unusual for Brighton) but what parking there is requires you to drive up a large curb. Anything vaguely sporty won't make it without scraping a few things.
- Access with a push chair is very awkward. The hotel entrance can only be reached by a steep set of stairs and the lift wasn't big enough for our Phil&Ted buggy.
- The rooms were clean and tidy but both rooms had wallpaper coming off the walls. The hallways are extremely tired with threadbare carpet, chipped paint and damaged walls.
- Bathrooms are cramped but we had plenty of hot water.
- Breakfast was okay but it feels a bit strange sitting in the bar area to eat it.
- As menitoned above, the staff were great on Saturday morning but quite surly at other times. We saw quite a few guests discussing noise, lift and room problems with the staff.
- Cost wise, there are better value hotels in Brighton offering a much higher standard of room both on the seafront and further into town.

Overall, we won't be returning to the New Madeira Hotel. It's perfect for hen/stag dos but for anything else, we wouldn't recommend.

Room Tip: If you have to stay, make sure that you're on the 3rd floor!

The corridors leading to the rooms are very narrow, the lift was working when we arrived but we still had to lug our bags up and down additional stairs. The beds in our twin room were very narrow and the rooms are not sound proofed. All through the night we could here people coming and going, doors being slammed, people walking along the corridor outside our room sounded like a hurd of elephants. In the morning there was no water from the hot tap so I washed my face bent over the bath tub. When it came to leave, the lift was out of service so again had to take our heavy bags along the very narrow corridors, down the stairs to reception. I informed the girl on the front desk that we had heavy bags hoping for some offer of assistance but not surprisingly, the thought didn't even cross her mind, bless em. If you really have to stay here, bring earplugs and very small bag.

Stayed here after refusing to stay in a room given to us at a larger hotel on 10/09/13. We were accommodated with a sea facing room right opposite the big wheel . Fab views and really good breakfast, friendly staff and all in all I would return here .

me and 2 friends booked this for 2 nights, has it was pride we wanted to stay the weekend, this hotel caught our eye, its local to restaurants/cafes , and sainsburys and Tesco was only 3 minute walk excellent if you want something urgent!

The room was clean , spacious and tidy,
the thing that annoyed us. was that someone pressed the fire bell and that bell was bloody LOUD at 1am!!!

other than that. this is a great hotel and location :)
