“The Lanes”
Reviewed 28 November 2013

Just to confuse visitors to Brighton there are 2 lanes in Brighton. The Lanes and across of North Street is The Laines. The Lanes after being fisherman cottages in the 17th and 18th centuries suddenly became popular when a Dr Richard Russell of Lewes believed that the seawater here in what was then called Brighthelmstone had medicinal properties as you can imagine the wealthy people of the land made their way here to take the waters. These old properties more or less lean in towards each other at their roof tops, the old cobbled streets are still there and it has become a fashionable area for independent retailers. Exploring these cobbled Lanes are a place where you can literally lose your way however ask a local and they will put you back on track. There are bars, cafes, restaurants and pubs in this area so plenty of time to dine and sit back, relax and just people watch.

“Perfect shopping”
Reviewed 27 November 2013

The Lanes consists of l ots of cute little shops, a mix of high-end and boutiques making it the perfect place for easy shopping. The narrow windy roads make it charming but mean you can miss lots, so take time to explore them all.

“Linger in the Lanes”
Reviewed 26 November 2013

A charming place to browse for antiques, especially jewellery. Wander to your heart's content looking at the lovely boutiques and glittery displays and stopping for a delicious coffee or snack to fuel your next few hours in this delightful part of Brighton. The North Lanes are also worth a visit with their alternative boutiques, vintage shops, cafes and bars.
