West Pier is no more after being burned down, rumoured to be by the lessees of Palace Pier. Who promptly renamed Palace Pier to Brighton Pier. One way to do away with your competition I suppose.
The point being that the image above is of Palace Pier and not West Pier which was a classy, genteel experience a millions miles removed from the kiss-me-quick of the remaining pier.
In summer, think Attenborough's Pinkie Brown in Brighton Rock and Oh What a Lovely War – all gone now. Instead it's candy floss, lager, burgers'n'onions, donuts, fish'n'chips'grease, loud music, fun-fair… not an enjoyable experience unless that's your thing. Mid-winter is better, to watch the waves crashing in after Atlantic storms and seagulls flying backwards.
In summer it's better to try Worthing pier for a walk across the waves, deep breaths of ozone, fishermen, art exhibitions…
