“Different hotel, unexpected quality”
Reviewed 2 June 2011

Having read some mixed reviews it was with some trepidation that we booked the hotel Seattle. Our concerns were not helped by the less than spectacular approach to the hotel front and as we drove between an asda supermarket and petrol station we had a truly blink and you'll miss it moment as we almost drove straight past the entrance to the hotel. We parked up at the drop off point and looked around. The entrance is one door width set between a couple of shops and again does not inspire confidence.

However, as it transipires, this uninspiring approach is down to the fact that the front door of the hotel is really at the back. Through the front door is a nautical themed entrance hallway that is quirky and yet relaxing, a feeling maintained throughout the hotel.

The reception is a large open room with a grand, modern glass reception desk large seating areas and retro furniture and has doors leading to the main bar and the restaurant. The latter has a definite nautical theme again and serves high quality food at very reasonable prices. It is a pleasant place to sit and eat and has the most pleasing cosmopolitan views over Brighton Harbour. It has an inside and outside seating area, the staff are friendly and helpful and have a relaxed yet professional demeanour.

The room we had was on the third floor and over looked the rear of the building, a not unpleasant view. The top floor theme is black and white but in truth barring the tv, speakers, bin and coffee it is white. This does give the room a slightly sterile feel but has an added bonus of showing up any unclean surfaces and I can honestly say it was the cleanest hotel I have ever stayed in, not even a scuff mark could be found on the skirting boards. It had an enormous super kingsize bed which was comfortable, fresh and gave me a great nights sleep. The bathroom is large with fantastic toiletries, a wonderful rainforest shower and 2 sinks.

These qualities would have been enough but the hotel has a great trump card. The bar is one of the nicest places to relax and have a drink I have ever had the pleasure of visiting. Furnished with ultra retro furniture and volume perfect background music, the bar is set out in sections each with a unique style, this gives the feeling that you are sitting in privacy rather than in the middle of a communal bar.

The only two criticisms I would have of the hotel are that it is a bit further out from brighton town than would be ideal and the wicker chairs provided in the rooms are impractical and deeply uncomfortable. I have also noted some comments about noise from nightclubs, I did not hear a thing but this was possibly down to us staying in a room on the back of the hotel and would advise anyone looking for a quieter room to ask for the back of the hotel rather than the front. I did not see a nightclub however there are a number of late night bars that border the harbour and I could quite imagine people being out to late drinking and talking over the weekend.

All in all I have to say that the hotel is a family friendly, well staffed and tastefully decorated hotel. I would not hesitate to go back the next time I am in Brighton and cannot thank the hotel and staff highly enough for giving us a wonderfully relaxing short break. 9/10

My partner booked this hotel for a long weekend away over the late may day bank holiday. We were suitably impressed by the hotel on arrival but were concerned over the mish mash of facilities. On the one hand, there were impressive restaurants and bars, then there was the MacDonalds that seemed to attract "boy racers" and lastly, a massive great Asda superstore! The hotel itself was very nice but if anything, the rooms were really basic. No air con which was a big let down, even though it was cold outside, the room was boiling hot and having the windows open didn't help! The fan provided was some help but not much! No wardrobe - just a hanger on the wall. Bed was comfy though. The biggest let down was the noise, there is a club called Karma under a section of the hotel which started at 6pm and went on until 3am, so if you wanted a peaceful early night, you aren't going to get it! On the plus side, the staff were friendly and helpful, breakfast was very nice, food made to order and the buffet had a wide variety to suit all tastes. Would I go back - probably not!

We have just got back from a trip to Brighton and would have loved to have stayed longer at the hotel. The room was very clean and bright. The bathroom was spotless with a fantastic shower :). We went out for the evening but came back late and sat in the bar, chilling on one of the comfy sofas listening to the music. Got up to a great breakfast overlooking the harbour. The hotel rang us before our stay to advise that there was a club with a late license and therefore it could be noisy but we had an inward facing room and were not overlooking the mariner so we didnt hear a thing. I would, however, when re-booking state that I would like a room with a mariner view as there rooms were slightly bigger . All in all a great find.

Room Tip: Mariner view rooms are more spacious

I liked the contemporary interior design in public area. Very good breakfast. I enjoyed dinner too in pleasant surroundings. Staff very courteous

Room Tip: Large Marina view rooms are best

Hotel is a chic boutique style hotel with superb/interesting decor. Prints of Beatles & 60s icons cover the Walls. Rooms & bars overlook the Marina which is calming. Rooms are vary chic with flat screen tv & iPod zeppelin for entertainment.

All seemed glorious until we visited the bar, ordered a Hendricks Gin & given the wrong Gin - which happens. But when we pointed out that the Gin didn't taste like Hendricks & asked if it was right we were told 'that Hendricks doesn't have a specific taste and we had been served correctly'. So we dropped it only to have a new drink given Tonys 5 minutes later by the barmen saying 'here you go this is definitely Hendricks - but it's no different!'. It wasn't what happened but how it was handled we were made to feel in the wrong even when the barmen subsequently (& begrudgingly agreed we were right).

Putting this to one side we went for dinner. Smart sounding menu lovely restaurant also overlooking Marina through a while wall of sliding glass doors which lead out onto dining area balcony. Again great impression let down by poor food and awful service. Starters were presented well but tasteless. Untouched food taken away without question. When, at the end of the meal we commented on the poor starters & cold dessert (chocolate fondue which should have been hit and tasty) we were told that no-one had ever had problems & she'd tell the chef immediately. This may have happened but we weren't updated. When we came to pay the bill the same waitress said 'Did you have a good evening? Did you enjoy your meal'. We reminded her of our conversation to which she said 'Oh'.

Unfortunately same level of service at breakfast with tea brought instead of coffee. Service continued at this level. Unfortunately it appears that staff are European (Spanish?) mainly with little grasp of English & no training.

To top it all my car parked in the multi - storey (complimentary hotel spots provided FOC) was driven into while parked by unknown driver/car. Not hotels fault but again when they asked what happened instead of saying something like 'That's awful' they said 'it doesn't happen often' somehow this annoyed me even more.

Shame because hotel had lots of promise. Get the service & food right & it could be a winner, but in it's current guise it's very dissapointing & not recommendable.

As a further postscript when we asked the restaurant manager about the interesting prints & posters he had no idea. 'something to do with the owners they were around in the 60's when these bands were around' ....so were we :)

Stayed at the hotel on 06-05-2011 in room 244, a king room overlooking the Marina. The room was large and very clean, the balcony was adequate with a great view. Everything in the room was White giving a modern feel. The bathroom was large with two sinks and a fantastic shower. The room also had air conditioning. The television was large and the room came with an iPod dock which wad great. Overall a great experience, wish we stayed more than one night.

Stayed Royal wedding weekend April 2011. Situated at good position in marina complex with excellent views directly over harbour and to sea. The elevated boardwalk leading directly to marina from hotel has a variety of restaurants and bars. The excellent bar and restaurant inside hotel are a level above boardwalk with both having balconies looking over harbour where you can dine and take afternoon tea. Food is good, bar well stocked and above all the service is great. Bedrooms are modern, well appointed with great toiletries and feel fresh. Welcome at reception is impressive without being gushing. This is possibly the best place in Brighton to stay even though it is 2 miles from centre of town. It is modern, has free parking and a regular bus service to shopping and entertainment areas. Overall a very good experience.
