I've visited Smokeys twice since they opened, and had a great experience on both occasions. The food is truly excellent - it's hard to find good BBQ in the south, but the chefs at Smokeys can hold their heads high. The pulled pork and ribs are succulent and flavourful, the hot link has a good bite and the brisket, while slightly dry, has a nice smoky edge to it. If anything, there's a bit too much choice, as the menu is fairly complicated! We found ourselves having to ask the servers how the combo meals worked.

Portion sizes are good, and the staff are more than willing to accommodate you if you want to try a combo that isn't listed on the menu. Speaking of the staff, I found them a bit mixed - some servers were eager and helpful, while others seemed disinterested and almost annoyed that we were there. Having said that, the atmosphere overall is warm and cosy.

I wouldn't however recommend the desserts at all - all our party agreed that they were not up to scratch compared to the rest of the menu. The cheesecake in particular was dry and stagnant. A shame.

To sum up:

+ Great selection of meats full of flavour (try the armadillo eggs!)
+ Big portions (with the offer of doggie bags to take away)
+ Light, casual atmosphere

- Desserts are a no go
- The menu could do with some simplification
- Some members of staff are better than others

We choose this restaurant for a work social trip, there was 3 of us. First impressions of the restaurant were good, nice atmosphere, feels very much like the typical BBQ / Steak House. Was greeted as soon as we walked in by the friendly tentative staff. Great selection of drinks and the waiter was really happy to walk us through the specials and help us order the best selection of what Smokey's has to offer.

We all had 3 courses including, Armadillo Eggs, Clam Chowder and the house speciality Meat Platter which has a selection of all the finest BBQ they do. The homemade coleslaw was legendary. A 2 person platter was more than enough to feed the 3 of us having had starters and moving onto the New York Cheese Cake. The food was good quality and well cooked. Service was excellent and the food came really quickly which was a great bonus as all three of us were starving by the time we arrived.

Really looking forward to going back here, hopefully soon.

Visited Smokeys for the first time last night and was blown away with the service, the atmosphere and the of course the food.

Brighton has needed a restaurant like this for a long time. I love all of this American type food, the Brisket, Pulled Pork and the Hot Link Sausage were all superb and the portions were more than generous - three of us barely managed a platter for two.

I started with the Clam Chowder which was exceptional, my friend had the Armadillo Eggs which were delicious.

We went early on a Thursday evening so it was actually quite quiet - but the soul music and the friendly staff had the place buzzing.

These guys deserve to do really well - I hope they do.

I was very pleasantly surprised indeed, great BBQ, as good as any I have had in the UK. Pulled pork and brisket particularly good. We had a platter and it was much more than we could eat, waiter kindly offered to get us a takeaway container for the leftovers, which made a great sandwich the day after!

Great value, great quality, we will be back

I went here with a work colleague and we had the Blow Out platter. It was fantastic, the meat was all perfectly cooked, moist, tender and exactly what you would expect. At £35 for the 2 of us, we couldn't complain, best value meal I have found in Brighton after numerous trips there.
I fancied pudding but we could only just roll out of the door as it was. We were handed a 10% off voucher for a return visit too, can't wait to use it. Highly recommended !
