I've visited Smokeys twice since they opened, and had a great experience on both occasions. The food is truly excellent - it's hard to find good BBQ in the south, but the chefs at Smokeys can hold their heads high. The pulled pork and ribs are succulent and flavourful, the hot link has a good bite and the brisket, while slightly dry, has a nice smoky edge to it. If anything, there's a bit too much choice, as the menu is fairly complicated! We found ourselves having to ask the servers how the combo meals worked.
Portion sizes are good, and the staff are more than willing to accommodate you if you want to try a combo that isn't listed on the menu. Speaking of the staff, I found them a bit mixed - some servers were eager and helpful, while others seemed disinterested and almost annoyed that we were there. Having said that, the atmosphere overall is warm and cosy.
I wouldn't however recommend the desserts at all - all our party agreed that they were not up to scratch compared to the rest of the menu. The cheesecake in particular was dry and stagnant. A shame.
To sum up:
+ Great selection of meats full of flavour (try the armadillo eggs!)
+ Big portions (with the offer of doggie bags to take away)
+ Light, casual atmosphere
- Desserts are a no go
- The menu could do with some simplification
- Some members of staff are better than others
