“A friendly and welcoming B&B”
Reviewed 9 November 2010

This is one of the most friendly and welcoming B&Bs that I've been to. Whilst our room was not huge it was tastefully decorated, the bedding was excellent quality and there were luxury toiletries. A nice touch was the 'snack box' in the room with crisps and biscuits. A continental breakfast is included in the price of the room but you can have a full English for an additional £6 which is worth it for the quality produce (great sausages and bacon!) The location is great, just minutes from the beach and an easy stroll to the Pier and the centre of Brighton. Parking could have been an issue but we were emailed before our visit to explain the options and Mark was on hand to provide the parking permit (£7 for 24 hrs) and advise us where to park. All in all a great break and I would recommend this B&B.

My husband and I booked a trip to Brighton without our 2 year old so we wanted somewhere extra special to stay.....and we certainly got that at this hotel.

We were made to feel very welcomed even though we arrived at midday and check in is normally 2pm. I expected to just leave our bags and come back later but we were told our room was ready and even better we had kindly been upgraded to a junior suite with lovely sea views.

The rooms are really tastefully decorated with original fireplaces, modern, simple furnishings and touches of luxury to make it all feel comfortable and a room you are happy to hang out in and not just a place to crash. Bed was very comfy.

Breaskfast was amazing. We paid extra to have it delivered to our room and thought it a nice touch that they delivered the 'cold' items (cereals etc) first and then the hot stuff (full english) about 10 mins later. Perfect as gave us a chance to eat our cereal and not worry about the full english going cold. On that note there is a surcharge of £6 pp for full english but its worth every penny and was so filling that we did not eat again till 6pm that evening - so saves the cost of a lunch.

Location wise its perfect.......just a stones throw from the beach, 5 mins from the pier and about 10 mins from the lanes but an interesting walk with lots of small shops on St James st into town. Best thing was that you were close enough to the action to get the atmosphere of the nightlife and area but tucked away down a side street so when you decided to go to bed you weren't bothered by it.

All in all a great base if you want to explore Brighton........I would definately go back.

From the minute we walked in the guys running Amherst couldn't have been more helpful & welcoming. The room was lovely, we had a nice view of the sea from the junior suite. The bedding was really top quality, lovely soft fluffy towels, excellent decor through out the hotel & lots of little extras in the room made this a great weekend. Breakfast was excellent too, we will definitely stay here again when we come back to Brighton.

We decided to have a city break in Brighton after we had to cancel our holiday to Maldives at very short notice. So, feeling like we'd rather be in the Maldives than Brighton, little did they know, the Amherst Hotel had it's work cut out before we'd even stepped over the threshold.

Lee and Mark couldn't have been more welcoming, helpful and friendly hosts. The room & public areas were spotless. We were not disappointed. Soon enough the Maldives was a distant memory.

The Amherst is located centrally-enough for you to enjoy all that Brighton has to offer without being stuck right in the middle of it. Parking wasn't an issue, we bought parking permits from our hosts and parked v nearby. Fantastic location, lots to see and do. We would recommend this as a great place to stay. If you don't like it at the Amherst...you're a hard person to please!

My Boyfriend and i recently stayed at the Amherst for a short weekend away.
We found the couple that run the Hotel so lovely, helpful and cheerful. Our room was of good size, really clean and the bed was so so comfortable. Breakfast is mainly continental with an additional cost of 6 pounds per person for a full english. (its delicious!!)
The only issues we had was a big climb to get to our room and finding a car parking space in zone c was difficult as its really busy in Brighton. Otherwise we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend this hotel.

The Hotel is just off the sea front and only a five minute walk from the pier and the heart of Brighton. We were delighted just how close to the sea we were.

From the moment we arrived we were made to feel welcome. There is no parking immediately in front of the hotel but Mark and Lee the owners provided us with very reasonably priced vouchers and we parked literally just round the corner.

We wanted somewhere a little special for a long weekend and had booked a junior suite. The room was at the front of the hotel with a large bay window giving a good view down to the sea. When we arrived the windows were open and we were concerned that the room might be noisy, but we had no need to be concerned because with the windows closed it was perfectly quiet. The room was large with high ceilings and was well furnished. The original fireplace added extra charm and character. There was a settee, table and chairs in the window, a large TV and the most comfortable king size bed we have ever slept in. The room was ensuite with a deep bath and a wonderfully powerful shower. The bathroom was spotlessly clean and there was a wide range of toiletries.

We strolled into town and down to the sea front and the hotel could not be better placed. We love Brighton and the Amherst is close enough to the centre to enjoy everything that the town has to offer but also in a quiet enough spot to really have a relaxing break.

Perhaps the best thing was that every time we came back to the hotel, Mark and Lee made a point of welcoming us back and asking how our day had been. This genuine warmth and hospitality is what makes this hotel such a good choice over the bigger Brighton chain hotels.

A warm greeting and shown to my Room on the top floor. Clean modernised facilities. Good lighting. Spacious wardrobe. Lots of thoughtful extras. Super soft towels. Crisp white linen on comfortable bed - slept very well. Breakfast, simple, healthy & adequate. Fairly priced and would recommend and return.
