“Good short stay in great location”
Reviewed 29 August 2011

We stayed 3 nights in the James Dean room and had a good time in lovely Brighton. The location is great and a short 20mins walk from the station and round the corner from loads of restaurants / bars etc. (Muang Thai round the corner was fantastic) but we had no problem with noise at all - apart from the odd squarky seagull - but that's the beauty of being so close to the sea! The room itself is quite small as others have said, but it was fine for us and our limited luggage, good comfortable bed, the bathroom is behind a slidey door in the same room, and quite narrow and basic, but good powerful hot shower. Overall, we found it good value for a short weekend stay - as there is such a difference in B&Bs in Brighton in terms of value and prices, and there are others that are perhaps a bit swisher/plusher and more modern but we found it good value and just what we needed. Good straightforward breakfast and cheery smiley service at all times - thank you very much.

Me and my partner recently stayed here for my birthday and considering what other similar b and bs are charging cannot fault the place. The guys that own Colson are a great laugh and really friendly and kindly recommended a couple of restaurants which were fab. We stayed in the James Dean room, and it does warn in advance there isnt much room for storage etc but we stayed from a Thursday to Sunday and had no problem with this. Considering how often we used the room etc it was perfect for us, the ensuite was fine and we didnt have a problem with it at all. I personally thought the choice for breakfast was great, there was fresh juice, filter coffee, tea, fresh fruit and cereals and then a cooked breakfast and rounds of toast. Considering how much other establishments charge for breakfast I thought it was great being in with the price. The positioning of Colson House is great too, just a short walk from st James Street and in Kemp Town and a real short walk from the pier, yet far enough away to not be kept awake by people all night. All in all I would definately use this place again when I next return to Brighton :) great job guys! Only thing id say to any people going to Brighton, I would always try and use public transport to get there as the parking is poor around the whole of Brighton.

We were booked into the james dean room but had to be moved because the shower kept cutting out. The shower in john Wayne wasn't much better. More than once we were given new towels that had not been washed and left fluff everywhere. Also, there was no choice or menu for breakfast and what we got wasnt very nice.

Not only do Mark and Eamon run an attractive and tidy guest house, but they're both terrific to talk to, give wonderful advice about the area, and have great senses of humor. When I left my watch at Colson House by mistake after leaving, they were also willing to mail it ahead to my next destination before I left the country, without charge or complaint, for which I can't thank them enough.

The rooms, delightfully, are themed after famous classic film stars.

My partner and I stayed at the Colson House for a long weekend in May as we both needed a break from work and family. The weather was fine, if breezy, and Brighton was as great as ever.

The Colson House was brilliant, our host Eamon was very friendly and his humour while serving breakfast really set us up for the day. We stayed in the Clark Gable room with four poster bed and plenty of space to relax.

The room was immaculately clean as was the bedding, not a sign of dust anywhere. It is obvious the owners treat the place as well as their own home.

It was my partner's irst visit to Brighton, she loved it and the Colson House. We will definitely be back!

This was a repeat visit to Colson House after we visited for the first time two years ago. The property is very well located close to the sea and ten minutes walk from the town centre and the pier.

The welcome was as warm as last time and Eamon in charge of the breakfast service was as cheery as ever.

The room (Judy Garland) was compact and clean but as with the rest of the property is starting to look a bit tired and in need of redecoration. The mattress was ultra soft and my fiancée and I had a couple of night’s disturbed sleep.

The breakfast was tasty but maybe the small plates and spoonful of beans is a sign of tougher economic times.

This is a grand building and understandably expensive to maintain andcould do with sprucing up as it does suffer from less kerb appeal than its competitors.

So all in all still worth a visit but needing some reinvigoration.

Room Tip: Clark Gable is a large room

We stayed in the Bette Davis room - thats the one with the large balcony which was great to relax on - no views except of the comings and goings of Upper Rock Gardens. The room was confortable, breakfast was lovely as were the staff. Nothing was too much trouble. Also its great to have dvd player in your room. We had a fabulous time and will be returning soon.
