“Time for a revamp”
Reviewed 26 March 2012

Almost every review for Avalon mentions the warm friendly welcome and rightly so but that isn't enough to compensate for the fact that the place is in serious need of a makeover and judging from the previous reviews, has been for a number of years. The room was decidedly scruffy and verging on grubby in parts and the bathroom was seriously in need of attention. Ten years ago, this might have been just acceptable but really, at these prices you'd be much better off in a Travelodge. Rooms on the street can be noisy at night.

We stayed at the Avalon for two nights, on a shopping and sight-seeing trip to Brighton. Brian, Tom and George are wonderful hosts, the food was lovely, the location perfect for quirky Kemptown and only a short walk to the Lanes. We asked for the ground floor twin room, as I am mildly disabled and don't manage stairs very well. Room is small but comfortable and well-equipped. However, it can be noisy from the traffic passing (same applies to many Brighton hotels) so if you can manage an upper room, it's probably quieter!

Already planning a return trip as soon as we can - I'm sure there are some shops we didn't get around to... Thanks again, guys.

Room Tip: Go for the upper floors if you can manage it - should be quieter.

On arrival we were met by George a very helpfull and polite person who promptly gave us our pass for the car and took our bags in the house. The room we booked was the King Double which was clean and well equipped although it looked a little larger on the internet it was well laid out with plenty of storage space and a good size en-suit bathroom with shower and bath.
Our dog Max the Westie was made to feel welcome and the hosts were more than accomindating in helping us settle in even supplying a map of the aera and marking out the resturants that we could take our dog into.
Breakfast was more than enough with plenty of good quality food and drink supplied.
If we had anything negitave to say it would be that the room could do with a fresh lick of paint just to brighten it up and Max was dissapointed he didnt get his VIP (Very important Pooch Pack) as advertised. But all in all we would highly recomand this as a great friendly place to stay. Good value for the money.

Room Tip: Choose the largest as the photos on the internet make the rooms look bigger than they are.

We had a 2 night stay in the Imperial Double. Room was quite small, but good for the (very competitive) price. It was well equipped and we used the DVD player and fridge! Breakfast was amazing; good size, lots of extra coffee and more food if you could manage it! Parking was hassle free, but only because we got a jammy space right outside. Lots of food places around the surrounding streets and a 10 minute walk to centre of town. Will be staying there if I go to Brighton again!

We recently stayed for two nights at Avalon. We had a very pleasant stay. We occupied the front bedroom that had a view of the sea. The room was very well equipped with everything we needed, even a DVD player! We could borrow DVDs to play from a selection of hundreds if we wished. The bed was warm and comfortable. The room was a little cold on the first night but the heat was turned on immediately when we asked. The hosts were lovely and friendly, and informative and helpful and did a delicious breakfast. The hotel had loads of charm and I will definitely be going back.

A group of my friends recently stayed at the Avalon and had a wonderful time. We were treated very well indeed and the service was hospitable and courteous. Nothing was too much trouble from specific dietary requests to getting us taxis and looking up train times. Brian, Tom and George were mine hosts extrordinaire and a good time was had by all. The breakfasts were wonderful and very filling. Rooms were clean and tidy and we had fridges and tea and coffee facilities.

Four of us were in Brighton for a meeting and stayed in this little, but very friendly place. Rooms were clean, comfortable with all amenities, nicely decorated and even come with resident Teddy-bears. The location is excellent and the staff are very helpful. It is very good value for money and very nice breakfast too. Had a really enjoyable time and would highly recommend this hotel.
