Hotel Una and the Quaile Suite

Review of Hotel Una
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 19 Nov 2012
We arrived at the Hotel Una, not far from the sea front and Brighton and were shown up to our room. To be exact four rooms on two levels. Entering into the dinning room, with a small coffee bar and facilities the eye is drawn to one of the two main windows looking out into the square. Then there is the lounge room with a large and very comfortable sofa. There is a walk in shower and well appointment toilet.

Both rooms have a TV system and there is also a dock for an iPod for music. Upstairs to the bedroom with a large free standing bath. The bed was large and comfortable. A sky light was over the bed. There was also a large TV available.

The other room on the top floor was the cinema room with giant projection screen and about 12 different remote controls to use it. This was possible the only downside in the whole experience as no one showed us where the master control was hidden so we had to call someone up to show us. Perhaps an instruction booklet or guide sheet in the future would help.

The decor was fun and modern and worked very well and the whole set of rooms worked together very well. The room was quite and though Brighton was very busy over the weekend we heard no noise at all when we settled down to sleep.

The rooms were spotless. An arrangement of flowers I had requested were in place. The whole experience was just wonderful and we had a brilliant time.

The staff were polite and extremely helpful and patient; even arranging an order of veggie pizzas for us.

We stayed here for one night in November. The hotel is easy to find. Parking is under the gardens in the square, very reasonably priced at £12 for 24 hours. The room we has was called Orinoco. It's on the third floor and looks out over the gardens and sea. Very comfortable bed.we slept very well. The slightly quirky wooden window blinds shutting out any street noise. but not sadly the wafts of cigarette smoke coming we assumed from staff smoking in the street below. The hotel could do with offering a choice of pillow too as we found then slightly too high. Large TV and radio. The bathroom is perfectly appointed. Good shower but not thermostatic. The staff could not have been more helpful or friendly. We had cocktails in the bar before going out to dinner and came back later for coffee. All served by the wonderful barman. Great choice offered for breakfast and the only place we have stayed at that offered a vegetarian full English (and very good it was too!). Where something was not quite right the staff made good with a wonderfully helpful attitude. I would recommend this hotel to any of my friends and family. I do hope however that something is dome about the cigarette smoke.

Visited Hotel Una for a surprise birthday weekend in Brighton. The staff were very friendly, room was nicely furnished with a really comfy bed, big tv, ipod dock and big shower. Location was good, only a short walk from shops and bars and the pier. Breakfast was also lovely. Only downside was that my boyfriend got charged twice for the hotel as they charged him before we arrived and after despite us telling them that we'd already been charged...so be careful if you havent got the money to spare in your account. He got it back but was a bit annoying!

I visited Brighton for the first time with my husband during the Olympics as we wanted a little seaside escape for a few days. All the rooms at Hotel Una are one-of-a-kind and truly original in design & layout, are all named after famous rivers around the world and are beautifully furnished with organic and natural materials.

We stayed in the ‘Orinoco’ room, a Superior Double, which had a partial view of the sea and lovely gardens /park below. The bed was a true King size (as often in the UK the king is more like a Queen size bed) and it was low to the ground and extremely comfy! During this leg of our England trip, our stay at Hotel Una was the best 2 nights’ sleep we had! We almost didn’t want to get out of the bed in the morning, it was so incredibly luxurious!

The hotel itself looks nondescript and blah from the outside just like every other property on the square, but once you enter past the front hallway, you are delightfully surprised by the design and décor! It is a very special place!

The bar itself is small but they offer every imaginable drink and it is served by a super-talented and friendly bartender, Koko! He generously provided good recommendations for things to see, do & dine in Brighton and was so very helpful with directions to everywhere, even drawing bright red routes on our maps! It is, by the way, extremely well-situated and you can access just about all the sights in Brighton from here (we walked everywhere from the hotel including to The Lanes, North Laine, The Royal Pavilion, The Pier, Brighton Wheel, seafront restaurants and shops, etc).

The same can be said for the rest of the staff as well. The smiles and genuine interest in helping their guests shows their passion and dedication not only to Hotel Una, but for Brighton as a tourist destination. With hotels and employees like these, Brighton will continue to be a popular seaside destination! The owners’ motto of passion, hard work, creativity and enthusiasm are clearly exhibited by everyone employed here!

What impressed us most was the multi-tasking, multi-talented nature of ALL the staff!
Koko was bellman, front office agent & bartender on the day we arrived. Jana was a highly efficient receptionist and our super-fast breakfast waitress at the same time! We loved the staff and great service at this hotel – from Paul, the manager who handled our reservation to Paulina & Harriett who graciously and speedily addressed every request or inquiry we had! Our kudos to everyone!

We were stunned by the tiny check-in area, which is really just a hinged counter space ingeniously fitted into the underside of a sloped low ceiling. Well done! It is simply remarkable to see! It truly may be the smallest, most-compact, cutest front desk area in the whole of Europe!

We were also impressed with the lovely vintage elevator. I’d say if you’re not staying at Hotel Una, it’s worth a visit to have a drink at the bar, marvel at the décor, ask for a glimpse of one of their rooms, see the check-in desk and the elevator!

Our only grumble with the room was the tiny bathroom and the toilet being really close to the wall. The bath is nicely designed with the frosted glass partition but getting in and out may be a challenge for those who are not nimble. Some grab rails may make things easier for all.
The window closing system was very unique and took abit of strength of co-ordination to close by raising it up & down by a handle. We loved the telescope in the room! We have never encountered this before on our travels! The coolest amenity ever!

The stairways are beautiful with elegant, hand-carved railings. We loved the horses everywhere! It was almost a game with my husband to see how many horses we could spot. They’re hung or sitting on each landing between floors and also in the bar. We simply loved them! All unique and very quirky!

Our praises to the owners for putting together such a very special place!

We had checked so many of the brand name and popular options in Brighton on Tripadvisor and after our visit, we totally understand why this little gem of a hotel is now No. 1 in Brighton! Congratulations! You totally deserve it!!

And....we'll definitely be back!!

Room tip: All the rooms are nice and all unique in their own way. Your choice really comes down to the emotions that the room invokes within you based on the design /layout. Also, your choice would depend primarily on your preferred sleeping arrangement, e.g. there are rooms with just 1 smaller bed like Henares or Kodori. There are some options with King beds like Orinoco, Flores & Neris. And there are a few with Super King beds. Different furniture in all - some have large couches or table or arm chairs. It's just really about personal preference.

My wife, baby and I stayed here for 2 nights and we went for the Quaile suite as wanted separate rooms so our baby could sleep and we could enjoy the room.
Quaile is a split level suite with a private cinema room. The room was excellent. Our only complaint is that the cinema smelt badly of stale smoke, which meant we didn't put the baby in there at night as planned, so she slept in a cot in our room.
The staff were very friendly, professional and helpful too!
We enjoyed a couple of wonderful cocktails from the bar, and got delicious pizzas delivered to our room from a local pizzeria as recommended by the hotel staff.
All in all a wonderful boutique hotel which was perfect for a special weekend break for the 3 of us.

We stayed in the Belize room for two nights, this room has a jacuzzi and sauna. The bed is very large and comfortable, it is a very soft bed so if you prefer a firmer mattress then this room might not be for you.
The sauna is brilliant and we felt lovely and warm, perfect for a cold day! The jacuzzi takes about 20 minutes + to fill so do it as soon as you wake or get back to the room. Perhaps a room welcome pack would have been useful to explain what you needed to do to ensure you are operating everything in the room correctly.
The room and the entire hotel is clean and well presented with works of art in each room that you find yourself looking at. The bar is equally furnished well and the cocktail waiter is amazing and took so much care over our drinks, you could see he took pride in his job. Our particular cocktails cost £7.50 each.
The breakfast is fine and made to order. We felt comfortably full after we had eaten. The service was very good and everyone is friendly and courteous. They go out of their way to help, be it ordering a taxi or booking/ recommending a restaurant. (Just as a point of note, the pier is 0.8 miles/ 20 minute walk although there are lots of restaurants and shops literally across the road)
In the room itself, there isn't lot of storage, we ended up putting our bags beside our bed, there is a cupboard in the room, but this only held four items of clothing that could be hung up.
The room is beautifully decorated with a huge TV, we watched one of the films from the hotel collection. There is even a remote control to use to help save energy when you have finished using everything.
We loved staying at Hotel Una, they made our stay even more enjoyable in this great city.
