Description: With a grand Cuban-inspired interior and a leisurely, laid-back atmosphere, Havana Restaurant and Bar in Brighton is located on the historic site of the old Duke Street Theatre which dates back to 1790. The restaurant's fine food, wine and live jazz bands will inspire you to start puffing on a cigar and reading a hedonistic Hemingway novel before dinner and the dining room boasts high ceilings, dark oak wood tables, a fountain and a grand piano adding to the restaurant's colonial charm. Favourite dishes from the modern British menu include the sirloin steak served with spinach, confit potatoes and Béarnaise sauce; and the rack of lamb with rosemary potatoes, courgette marmalade, baby red peppers and basil mash.

“HEAVENLY HAVANA”
Reviewed 28 June 2014

Dining at Havana is a pleasant mix of several pleasures:

The decor is refreshing, summery and somewhat elegant in a chic, Cuban style without trying too hard. The waiters are engaging, amusing and helpful. Best of all, the two-course set menu is both appetising and good value! What's not to like?!

We dined there earlier than the appointed time for the set dinner menu but, our charming and deliciously camp waiter, Fernanda, saved the day by inviting us to drink up the dregs of the stunning sunshine outside while positively encouraging us to 'get drunk' before coming back inside to dine in the restaurant section!

After feeling frightfully tipsy from our considerable draught of sunshine and lashings of Hildon spring water (!), we were somewhat choosy about which table to take for dinner. The section at the back of the restaurant, while being the most quaintly stylish, happens to be home to a little water feature which reeked of chlorine when we were there. Fernanda didn't grumble though: we moved to the other side of the floor and took up residence just sufficient distance from the fountain so as to enjoy its trickling pleasures without being taunted by the chlorine fumes! He was equally obliging despite our brief interlude of musical chairs!

The two-course set menu is a treat. A spiced sweet-potato soup that came in a bowl with a brim as wide as a woman's hat and with as much intoxicating pleasure as a Philip Treacy creation!

Main dish consisted of pan-fried salmon served on a bed of boiled potatoes (tasting nothing like the bland banality that boiled potatoes often assume) and cooked to perfection. Fernanda accidentally announced that the fish was grilled but this was a pardonable peccadillo given how delicious the fish was!

For a cooly smart, fun night out, I would heartily recommend Havana. A slight, authentic taste of Latin America with the added charm of a merry band of waiters, though Fernanda was the star when we were there!

Eat, drink and be merry!

First time in Brighton and we was recommended to try this place. Service was outstanding and the cocktail I had was the best cocktail I've ever expierenced. Elderberry gin something. Delicious. Would definitely go back!

“Excellent dining experience”
Reviewed 20 June 2014

Went to Havana for my birthday celebration last Saturday night. The place was busy with a wonderful atmosphere. The staff were all attentive and friendly and the food was delicious. Had the pork belly which was cooked to perfection and the live music made the evening. Special thanks to Martha who looked after us so well.

“Lunch lacked a little atmosphere”
Reviewed 19 June 2014

I had high hopes or Havana but the fact that we were the only people in the restaurant meant it lacked atmosphere. The decor is lovely, and I imagine an evening meal would be quite a different experience. The food was presented beautifully and was well priced. Seabass on courgette risotto and asparagus was £16 aprox. Unfortunately we also didn't get the excellent service I'd read so much about. Considering the restaurant was empty her attitude appeared as if it was all too much effort and when asked what flavour ice creams were available she replied I don't know before going to check. Hopefully this was just a rare off day.
