Description: The Hotel du Vin Bistro in Brighton is just off the seafront and five minutes from the madly inspiring shops in The Lanes, but who would want to leave? Set in a collection of gothic and Tudor revival buildings built by, so apt, a wine merchant, the hotel has the trademark stylish, witty, super comfortable dcor that has won the group so many awards. The restaurant is elegant and relaxed and usually full, offering a menu rooted in classic European cuisine with a contemporary edge. The simple classics change seasonally, augmented by head chef Rob Carrs own creations each day. The extensive, eclectic wine list is central to the hotel, with a great number of choices by the glass.

Odd that Sunday brunch starts at 12am but it's worth the wait. Selection not quite as extensive as Tunbridge Wells but still lovely. Good service. Still not ecstatic about the decor.

Group of 14 of us had a meal here and nobody expressed any interest in going back.
I asked for my steak to be medium rare and was told that they could only do rare, medium or well done(??!!). I settled for rare and was given a cold steak that was half raw and half well done - not what I would expect from a £25 steak!

Another thing to note is the wine list - the cheapest bottle was £33, but the menu has other bottles from £20-30 which we didn't realise until we had already ordered ! The waiter also knocked over half a glass as he wqs refilling but didn't give us any compensation.

What we eat there was ok but was massively overshadowed by the terrible service we received. The waitress was patronising and icy. I think she needed to learn some people skills. Really put me off going back as I don't need to be treated like that.

Food was good (camemburt burger) but waitress a bit 'dippy', we were' not brought 2 menu that were available (other diners were so we had to ask), ate in their courtyard which was lovely and shady on a hot day.

Bit hate: We were outside in an enclosed courtyard but it was full of diners and yet people were allowed to smoke. Really? Yes, OK when no diners but it really ruined our experience.

There were 2 weddings at the hotel that day and so one terrace was made out of bounds. That's ok except that's where the toilets are ... I was told to use the not-very-clean disabled toilet. I don't mind using a disabled toilet (pleased there is one) but it wasn't very smart or particularly clean.

overall, lovely lunch with the partner but room for improvement.

Thank bexsell
