“had a 'carpeted gloomey pub' feel to it”
Reviewed 24 July 2011

My boyfriend and I wanted a short break away in hastings and last minute we chose this hotel. The hotel was quite a walk from the main 'hussle and bussle' of the seafront so it ment we had to drive down and pay for parking. Walking inside (appreciating that it is an old hotel) we found to be quite dark and gloomey. The decor doesnt give it any justice. The receptionist was nice enough but not as chatty and cheerful as we are used to to. (we usually stay in B&Bs and find service on the whole a much higher standard probably as they are running their own business). We paid £65 a night for a superior double and requested a sea view. We didn't get the sea view which was probably down to them having the front of the hotel painted which ment scaffolding was up. It would have been nice to have been warned of this as the sea view was a important part of our stay. Our room was lovely and spaceous - something you dont usually find in other hotels. The bed it self was fine but the pillows were awful! the stuffing in them was horrible to lay on - so bring your own! In the bathroom (again a good size) they have baths but with a shower that connects to the taps. I didnt wash my hair over the stay because the water that came out of the shower was a dribble, which made it impossible. These really is not to standard at all, and really let the hotel down. Another nice touch would have been to have had flannels provided. Our room on the whole was clean and furtinture was in keeping with the hotel.
Overall the hotel had a' carpeted gloomey pub' feel to it which i didnt like. Its sad as its a nice old victorian building with large windows. I would have rather of booked into a nice little B&B with a personal touch for the £65 we paid.

Hotel rooms a little tired but comfortable , good views, parking right outside, my request for a room near the lift was done, the food was good but the bar was very expensive don't ask for wine we brought our own from the nearby shop and had our drink in the comfort of our room, generally nice hotel though.

We got a really good bed and breakfast deal on the hotel website so we were not expecting too much. Instead we got a great suite, large bedroom, seating area and bathroom and I could not fault any part of our stay. Free parking outside the hotel for the duration of our stay was a real bonus.

We had a fantastic stay at this lovely old Victorian hotel. The room was a very good size with terrific views over the sea, the room was spotless and smelt fresh and clean. Woke up to the sound of the sea breaking on the beach.
Public areas were all well kept and the front of the hotel was being redecorated while we were there.
The staff were all very polite and helpful, good breakfast and the bar offered a fair choice of beers.
Would definitely stay here again.

This grand old hotel really takes you back in time. The history and splendour of this Victiorian property is pleasingly matched by its attention to modern day features.
Spacious room complete with seperate lounge coupled by friendly staff.
Our stay was only marred by a howling gale battering at the windows but then what can you expect when your hotel stands right on the seafront!

We are lovers of faded grand Victorian hotels, and this one did not disappoint! The first floor and grand staircase are particularly good. Staff were incredibly helpful and pleasant. We had a sea-view suite - it was very comfortable if a tiny bit shabby. Bed was comfortable and breakfast was fine. People who want up-to-the-minute boutique type hotels will not like this - people who have a sense of history and enjoy the quirky will be happy here.

Joining friends for sunday lunch, negotiating the rotating foyer door should have said something but missed it. Told restaurant was on the 1st floor and so assended the lovely sweeping staircase, good point. While waiting for the rest of the party decided to pop to the ladies, bad move. This part of the hotel must be on the decorating list along with the ladies room. The toilet I used had cracks in the back of the enamel seat and the toilet area must be on the do-it up list. Freinds arrived and we were shown in to the dining area and took our seats. The rolls were already on the plates, don't know how long, we were then asked which starter we would like and order duly taken. Simple, no, plates were put down and then taken away as items were left off and one of our party only received her starter after we had all finished, how long for a few lettuce leaves, a shave of parmesan and 3 little prawns oh and some chilli sauce, which was left off the other plates that had to go back. Time for the Carvery. step up to the Plate, plate in hand ask for the roast beef, had to carve off some of the meat as it was gray and dried out, next the yorkshire pud placed gracefully on the plate with a blue gloved hand, oh well. Next the potatoes and veg, browning cauliflower, brick hard roast parsnip, cold broccoli, zeppelin sized carrots and of course cold roast potatoes covered with a thick, but hot gravy, this i did not know until i had sat down at the table with my plate. Asked for it to be reheated in microwave which was duly done but by then my yorkshire pud was flat and so was my appitite. Friends had to wait while all the potatos and vegetables were taken out back to be warmed up again. Perhaps the use of lidded serving containers would improve the life span of the vegetables. Next the dessert, Ok not too bad, a bit lacklustre, but unable to get cheese and biscuit as kitchen had ceased, perhaps could be on the trolley just in case somebody would like that instead, loss of at least 1 potential revenue . Last but not least Coffee £3 for such bitter coffee that had to have sugar a no no. Staff were attentive and pleasant enough but that was not what was paid for the food was and with a little more thought to planning and attention to detail this review could have been so different
