“grand hotel in it's day”
Reviewed 29 June 2014

We stayed in room 204 and I would definitely recommend you also choose a sea view room. The room was huge and clean but needs a bit of tlc!! The bedroom area is massive so would benefit from a king or queen size bed and carpet has seen better days . Bathroom was down a few stairs and was big and also included a study area next to it. The hotel staircase is amazing. In it's heyday it would have been a very grand building. It still is but just a bit faded in certain areas. We ate one night in the restaurant overlooking the sea. Food was great but menu very limited with only four choices. The azure restaurant a few yards down from the hotel is a beautiful place to eat. The staff in the hotel were friendly and helpful and we had no parking problem. I would recommend this hotel and was slightly put off by some negative reviews but our room was fine. It looked like it had been refurbished recently.

Room Tip: Definitely get a sea view. Room 204 is big with amazing view.

Just retuned from our second stay at this once great hotel. Our first stay was great in all aspects but this time not so. The room 203 was not the best with patches in the carpet holes in the bathroom flooring windows that are painted shut a bed that was stuffed with the noisiest of potatoes and no biscuits on the tea tray. Breakfast was good as long as you timed it so that the eggs were freshly cooked so they were soft. Do not go for the evening meal, overrated and over priced. Parking is a joke. There are only six parking bays the rest is street parking, a bit of a problem when you are disabled. The first night parked on the street and was completely blocked in by a member of staff who could not be found so unable to get electric scooter from car or get car out. The following day given cones to reserve space. Went out for the day and on return cones had bean removed and staff cars in the parking bay so had to park streets away. The next day the parking bays were occupied with staff again and with people working in the hotel. So all I can say is if you are going to Hastings do not stop here as it is going from good to absolutely terrible.

Room Tip: Use a different hotel

I've stayed here a few times & ever the latest visit ended with mixed feelings but overall it's very good value for the money. Pro's - plenty of free parking in the adjacent roads if you can't get right outside, pleasant staff & a good sized room. Con's - the slowest lift in the world, poor TV reception & a shower fitting that makes getting wet very difficult as it points towards the wall!

Overall though, I'd happily stay there again.

We took my 98 year old mother for 3 nights away in this hotel. Lovely Edwardian building & the bedrooms were huge with settees. Although a little outdated the rooms were clean. Dinner was not good. A very limited menu, only 1 fish and 1 vegetarian option with3 meat options and my mother only eats fish and chicken. Her fish was so overlooked we used all the pats of butter to give it some moisture:my pork chop was so dry it was up hard to cut though my husbands lamb rack was just ok. Dinner on the 2nd night was as bad: my mother and I had the veggie option of a mushroom risotto which should have been lovely but was so stodgy even the waiter said it looked awful and in fact refunded our 2 meals. Each night it was the same menu with the sauce changed. Parking is slightly difficult but we always found a space, if not in front, round the back of the hotel.
One or two staff were a little surly but on the whole helped when something went wrong and we were delighted to find blankets which we prefer. I had checked on this before leaving home.

Room Tip: The fifth floor was quiet

Hotel very good with grade II listed staircase and impressive chandeliers. Good size bedrooms and bathroom but unusual not to have duvets on beds - sheets and blanket instead. Very good breakfast where staff were helpful as were the staff on reception. We walked to the old town in the evening on the same side as hotel and some parts were a little intimidating in retrospect we should have walked along the promenade.

We stayed in a family room which was huge with high ceilings. The room was divided into two areas with one double bed and two singles. Having checked in with a non smiling receptionist we were told we would have to find parking on the streets behind the hotel. This wasn't ideal as it was tricky carrying our suitcases from a five minute walk away. The approach to our room was down a dark corridor smelling of cabbage and old people. The room was shabby with ripped lampshades. Beds were lumpy and squeaked at every movement. Bathroom had mould around the bath. Noisy at night with traffic. Area unpleasant and run down. Not enough staff to cater for lunch and wasn't that full. Thirty minute wait for dry sandwiches. Breakfast ok but unpleasant eating off stained table cloths. Wouldn't recommend.

It's such a lovely building , you can tell in it's heyday it would of been beautiful . The decor inside is outdated , not the nice vintage type either. The building inside is pretty with old marble columns and grand staircases , just the furniture and curtains etc leave a lot to be desired . Our room was clean , nice double bed and huge bathroom , clean bed linen so no complaints there. The evening atmosphere in the hotel was boring ( we headed back as the nightlife in hastings was non existent ). Bar man was polite , although they did run out of lemonade early on so my vodka was topped up both bottled lemo ( he did charge us correctly though , so good on him ). On checkout the next day we noticed one of the reception rooms in the entrance was infested with ants ! Not again sadly
