Owner description: Hastings Museum & Art Gallery is a family-friendly museum with amazingly diverse collections. Established over 125 years ago, the Museum offers local people and visitors the opportunity to explore art, culture and history from around the world. Before Hastings tells the story of this area from prehistory to the Saxons and The Story of Hastings in 66 Objects continues the story from 1066 to today. Wildlife is displayed in dioramas of different local habitats and you can discover our prehistoric past in our interactive Dinosaur gallery. Our fine Native North American collection is displayed in three galleries, featuring the Plains and Sub-Arctic areas and the life of Hastings-born Grey Owl. The most spectacular part of the Museum is the Durbar Hall, which contains our World Art displays, as well as being used for a range of events, including weddings. Exhibitions are housed in the Long Gallery. Go to HMAG.org.uk for our current programme.

this museum and art gallery ranges from life size native americans and mods, to the great story of the invention of TV, wildlife, cartoon characters, 20th century photos, paintings by female artists, to a recreated moorish palace - all have a link to hastings. i loved it, even though it took me a while to work out how to use the front door entry system - the door release panel is quite far from the door. and its free.

Very interesting museum; lots of information on famous people who had lived in Hastings. Excellent art exhibition by female artists. Lots of interesting things for children of all ages to do. Good exhibition on Grey Owl. Shame no coffee shop - well, I didn't find one.

Thank granster

I'm amazed at the reviewer who gave it a poor review. Since the museum's revamp, it looks bright and cheerful, not at all dusty (apart from some stuffed animals, perhaps). The different sections are very varied: the one on Grey Owl is excellent; Logie Baird not bad, though you have to work hard to fathom out how his TV system worked. The Brassey collection is amazing, and children can try exotic costumes on. There are two rooms devoted to art - pictures (often local) from the permanent collection, including a Turner; and one or two temporary exhibitions that are always interesting.

Definitely worth a visit to explore both the history and the talents of the region. Worth an extra day in the region.

I absolutely love this small museum. So much to see, and very informative. I love the relaxed feel of the place. The variety and mixture of the collection gives one an intimate view of Hastings. I have been back on several occasions and cannot believe that is free to the public. I will certainly be visiting again.
