“a time-honoured circa 1800 build - should be a jewel in Hastings crown”
Reviewed 16 December 2012

DISLIKE - the councils neglect of this glorious Victorian edifice - built into the rock. It deteriorates by the hour - waste - waste.
LIKE - the magnificent exterior built in the centre of Pelham Crescent, flanked by private balconied flats and the guided tour you can take of the interior and its atrium and auditorium

“Georgian gem”
Reviewed 30 May 2012

St Mary in the Castle is carved into the rock underneith the castle in a goergian crscent in a Neo-classical Pantheon-style. You access the chapel through a cafe and long winding crypt into a domelike central chapel. The church is now part art gallery part performance space, primarily for classical concerts but tours are available.

“An underused gem”
Reviewed 7 March 2012

Cut into the rock, it is an excellent venue for concerts and events. If it was used more they could afford heating.
