Never been inside before. Good venue for music as curved like an amphitheatre, good accoustics. A previous reviewer thought it was too loud. Live music events tend to be loud by definition, & a Soul party is not going to be soothing chamber music! There was a fire alarm which was handled very well by stewards evacuating 200+ persons. The main bar has a plaque on the wall nearby about a deceased Reverend, this is an historic church after all. Quite strange. The bar staff all seemed overly young & not very experienced really. If this place is to succeed serving alcohol, or any other refreshments, they need to get to grips with serving lots of customers, & GET SOME DECENT DRAFT BEER!. There are several excellent micro breweries in Sussex. There is a good one less than a mile away!

you're really surprised about how big it is, and how many seats you can fit in, the building is really impressive, when you first see it from the outside you would never expect it to be that big on the inside! amazing!

I have been to see three things at St Mary in the Castle recently. The Purcell double bill back in September, the Show of Hands concert in October and Emily Barker last Saturday. All the concerts were fantastic, and the amazing architecture of St Mary in the Castle meant the concerts had a staggeringly beautiful back drop. I have often heard the acoustics for St Mary in the Castle praised for un-amplified music and criticised for amplified. The concerts I went to were a mixture and all sounded wonderful. I can't wait to go back again.

Visited as part of Hastings Composers Festival 2013. Very interesting building and good acoustic, good potential for arts events like this and of various sizes: intimate space but with much more seating in the gallery. Nasty smell of damp and many walls unflustered, and too limited dressing-room space (only one room).
