We arrived as three cyclists from a 9pm Newhaven Saturday night ferry wanting a Lewes pub in walking distance of a friend who lived in town (who wanted to be able to get home in good time).
As you'll find out, rooms in central Lewes hotels are either dire or extortionately expensive. Not so the Chalk Pit. It may be a mile or so from the centre (and half a mile from another pub in Offham), and easily forgotten as a Lewes pub, but it would be a mistake to leave it out of consideration.
They have a pair of chalet type rooms detached from the pub, each with a large bedroom and bathroom with electric shower + loo. These are well set back from the main road (in an old chalk quarry) so no traffic noise at night. Having originally booked for 4 persons we had two beds in each (1 was double+single), but I think they can be re-arranged given notice. At about £55 per room including a delicious full English breakfast for 4 persons this is breathtakingly good value compared to what you'll get in town. Each room has a massive TV & coffee making equipment if you're not into playing Toad in the hole in the pub ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toad_in_the_hole_(game) ).
Very friendly and accommodating staff.
The pub is pretty good too (Harveys on tap with 1664 & San Miguel lagers among others, cider, etc. - good selection of whiskies too) and has a covered outdoor pool table (so good for smokers).
