My wife and I chose this Hotel through Groupon, we got a decent deal and were looking forward to a relaxing visit to historic Lewes on the cheap. On arrival at reception we were met by a rather dour Eastern European gentleman who was very efficient but totally lacking any curtesy and when he said we were in the annexe room 30, our hearts sank, we'd read the reviews regarding the annexe! We bit our lips and made our way there, first thing to hit you upon gaining access is the smell! A sort of cross between damp and stale cigarettes ugh! On entering the room we had a nice surprise as everything seemed ok, a little shabby but not terrible, then we opened the bathroom door which hit the unit behind it, it was tiny, my wife likes a bath but it was shower only, you also have to close the door to get to the toilet :/ we could put up with this and we did.
We decided to explore before our evening meal, Lewes is a lovely little town with chic shops and eateries aplenty, it has a brewery too which made me happy ;) the walk built up an appetite for dinner back at the hotel, on being seated we were shown the menu for groupon customers, the choices weren't bad but after being seated for 5 minutes our waitress in formed us that 3 of the 4 choices weren't available lol! We were allowed to choose from the regular menu, my wife had steak but I had Guinea fowl the remaining choice on the groupon menu, the food was edible but the chefs kitchen is in the restaurant where you can see the cooking but also hear the annoying banter between him and the waitress! We numbed the pain with a bottle of wine and retired to our room. Now came the icing on our particular cake! My side of our small double bed had a sinkhole in the divan! I tried to stuff it with spare blankets without success, on checking out very tired the next day the dour receptionist asked if we'd enjoyed our stay? I told him about the poor nights sleep and the knackered divan to which he said he'd get housekeeping to replace the mattress? I said again that it was the divan that's holy not the mattress but I think the sinkhole will still be there this time next year but I won't be returning to find out. Groupon equals second class but either way if you can avoid it please do. My wife on reading this has asked me to add that the room was very clean and her steak was delicious, she thinks I've been harsh, however she says I didn't mention the noise from the room directly above us, paper thin ceilings and walls. How's that love?
