We booked for two nights as the hotel is convenient for Glyndebourne. The hotel is a charming mixture of regency and earlier construction - the superior rooms (ours anyway) are spacious, with room for armchairs, a large walk-in closet and bathroom, with bath and separate shower. Decor is traditional and of a high standard - pubic rooms have great character. We were not able to try the restaurant for dinner, as the timings of performances did not allow, but other guests commented favourably on the menu and the quality of the food.
Staff were helpful and gave very useful input on travel to Glyndebourne, which is a £9.00 taxi ride each way. The hotel-owned car parking (not universally available in this old town) was especially welcome. Overall it was good value and a very relaxed atmosphere - when we return next year, the only change I would make would be to ask for a room overlooking the quiet and pretty garden.

The Shelleys is well located within the lovely town of Lewes, but with its pleasant garden it feels secluded. The building itself is elegant and the bedrooms and bathrooms were very well appointed and decorated and of very generous proportions. We ate dinner in the restaurant and we and our friends had a excellent meal. Above all the staff could not have been more pleasant. From the time of making the booking to checking out they all could not do enough to be helpful and give first class, friendly service. It would be an excellent base for Glyndebourne, exploring the Bloomsbury trail or just strolling around Lewes. It was a shame we didn't have more time to check up the towns many pubs.

We stayed at this hotel on a recent visit to Lewes. We found the hotel was brilliant the food was top class as was the room and the service provided by every member of staff apart from one.
There is a Chinese (I think) waitress who has possibly the worst attitude I have ever encountered in my many years of staying in Hotels. She is always it seemed in a hurry to do something else therefore meaning you are made to feel like you are an obstacle that she cannot wait to knock over. She is objectionable to both customers and her colleagues alike. That is when you can understand what she is saying under her breath as she walks away.
The worst part of her behaviours was her openly shouting at the receptionist because she was away from reception helping a guest in the lounge room.
This young lady must be a joy to work with !! I for one would be inclined to stay away if I knew she was to be there if I wanted to re visit the Shelleys.

We stayed at the Shelleys for two nights. We booked (what we considered to be) the best room in the hotel and felt that our room was very tastefully decorated and had a real touch of class about it. Our friends x6 making up three other couples (also staying) went for the slightly cheaper option rooms and all were extremely happy with their rooms.

The real winner for the Shelley though is the ever helpful, polite enthusiastic staff. So lovely to be looked after well.

Breakfast was totally yummy. The only downside was that there were no tea and coffee making facilities in the room, however, free room service of a morning with tea or coffee sort of made up for that.

We are quite well travelled. South America, North America, round the world trips etc etc. And if someone were to ask where to stay to get a little bit of good English hospitality in the South, although in the upper price range, we would definitely recommend the Shelleys.

Keep it up you good folks and we hope to see you soon....

Superb, historic and quintessentially English hotel. The place is understated yet stylish with charming staff. It took us about 10 minutes to get back to it from Glynebourne and was the perfect complement to our visit to the opera house.

We had requested a room at the back overlooking the garden but for some reason were given a room at the front. It was not, though, noisy and was elegantly furnished, very clean and comfortable so this turned out to be a minor irritation.

Breakfast, waitress served in the dining room, which overlooks the garden with glimpses of the Downs was quite excellent. The jams are made by the chef; reflective of the attention to detail that characterises this place.

We would not hesitate to book again or recommend this hotel to friends.

Had booked a room at another hotel in the town and, upon arrival there, was told, due to waterlogged rooms, they had to transfer me to the Shelleys. What a blessing as they had upgraded me to a superior room ,which was excellent on comfort and position. I only stayed the one night and had arranged to eat at another restuarant in the evening. I therefore cannot comment on the dining experience ,save that the English breakfast was superb.
Praise also to the staff who were extremely pleasant and courteous.
This is a very comfortable ,quality hotel in a very good position in the town.

We went to the shelleys as part of a wedding party last weekend
We had the chance to see several of the rooms which were all decorated beautifully and quite stunning. The rest of the hotel and gardens were up to the same high standard. Extremely helpfull staff that gave the impression that nothing was too much trouble and we were looked after from first thing in the morning and even up until 3am-ish the following morning.
We were initially irritated that there were no tea and coffee making facilities in the rooms but after a few days there understood the reason, everything was fresh and of a very high standard, so if you wanted a coffee you just had to call for one.

Room Tip: Room 7 (our room) was large and very comfortble (no view though - but this was not an issue as we we...
