Stayed here last night, got a superior room which was dark and gloomy with a very dated look, facing a wall. Woken at 5am by rattling pipes and a guest using their bathroom (not so nice). Charged £160 for the privilege. Receptionist challenged me on my arrival as to whether I was actually going to stay!

We really cannot identify with this review and do not feel able to comment as a result

Shelleys has a great deal to offer with a rich heritage spanning several hundred years. The staff are also committed to providing a great service and are passionate about the hotel

Forget everything about 3, 4 or 5 stars ... this is simply a very good hotel with a characterful interior and very friendly and helpful staff. We had a clean and comfortable room (and very good bed !). Value for money !

I'm a bit baffled by all of the 5 star reviews as i found the Hotel very average.
For a hotel charging 4 star prices, the service was very 2 or 3 star.
OK, but certainly not value for money.

Adequate but very tired in decor and found it annoying that some facilities (such as the shower) didnt work. When reported to the receptionist, she more or less tried to tell us that we were being untruthful.

A back stop option for Lewes as there are much better places available

This is a disappointing review and certainly at odds with the run of play here which is not to say we do not value this guest's feedback. Equally we cannot identify with some of the remarks given the diligence of our staff and the hotel's rich heritage

This hotel is a charmer, boutique style, old fashioned place to rest and relax. It has a fine dining room, while not totally upscale is warm, friendly and very satisfactory. The car park is tight but just a few feet awat from the main entance. No elevator to the upper floors. Lewes is a cute charmer near Brighton, and we prefer Lewes to Brighton as a base of travel as it is warmer in spirit, and far more intimate than a larger tourist center than Brighton. Use this hotel for a quiet and friendly stay.

A great review thank you and for visiting from the States. Shelleys dates back to the Sixteenth century so there is no lift I'm afraid

The staff were really thrilled by the warmth of your remarks

Lewes has so much to offer and hopefully we will see you again before too long

Renewed thanks

My husband and I returned from a seven night stay this week. We had a most enjoyable stay. The room was very large and so comfortable. We had three very large windows overlooking the garden two of the windows had seats with cushions and it was very restful to sit and reflect. The bathroom was beautifully warm and a very good size. The bed was so comfortable I wish we could have taken it home! All of the staff were so friendly and could not do enough for us. We had leisurely tasty breakfasts at our own pace again the staff were so friendly and obliging. There was plenty of parking and we had no problems even when we returned late at night. The Shelleys will definitely be our first choice when next staying in the area.

We were so pleased to look after you from the West County and love the fact that Shelleys is now your first choice in Lewes. We like to think of her as the Grande Dame of Lewes High with so much to offer

Hopefully your plans will allow a return visit before too long and meanwhile renewed thanks for your custom and kind words

We had a very small intimate wedding reception at The Shelleys on 23rd August 2013 we booked the drawing room. What a fantastic day. The weather helped and we were able to enjoy the garden and terrace. The table looked lovely. The service was second to none. They were attentive at all times without being obtrusive. Staff were friendly and polite. The choice of food was lovely and beautifully cooked and presented. I cannot thank them enough for making our wedding lunch so special. My husband and I also stayed overnight. We found the room comfortable and very clean. Breakfast was enjoyable and service was good. I would describe the hotel as upmarket boutique. It has an oldie worldy charm of its own. Would happily book a function there again. It is more expensive than other choices but for us it was worth every penny. Thank you

I booked two nights at the Shelleys in the "Earl of Dorest Suite" for a special occasion anniversary weekend. We had stayed there twice previously and had been generally satisfied with the service and level of comfort. Not on this occasion.
Our stay at the end of September was marred by the fact that the heating was not yet due to be turned on and the hotel was consequently cold throughout. I raised this with the reception desk and I was told that they couldn't come any sooner to turn on the heating but that they could possibly find some heaters somewhere but nothing came of it. Not good enough.

For a hotel that "combines English tradition with contemporary luxury" (read the publicity on the home page) I would expect a normal level of central heating. This is a given in any household and shouldn't be an issue in a £180 per night suite. Comfort should not be governed by an arbitrary date set on the annual calendar (middle of October turn heating on, before that date hope for the best).
I raised the issue again when checking-out and expected a reasonable adjustment to the bill given the lack of comfort. Disappointed again. I pleaded my case regarding the lack of heating throughout but I was told that they had not received any message regarding my initial complaint and would have certainly been able to find some heaters for us to use if they had known. Heating a room is a basic requirement at all times and should be near the top of their list in order to provide that "contemporary luxury" and to ensure that "every need is anticipated at The Shelleys".
A bit of advice for you - rewrite the blurb on the home-page of the website and forget the hyperbole. You are offering a hit or miss experience and you do not take criticism well.

A disappointing review appearing to revolve around the heating which has unfortunately coloured this guests view of their stay. We are naturally sorry they felt their stay was marred as a result

We agree totally that an ambient temperature is important. The hotel, even allowing for its centuries old age, has a robust and fully maintained central heating system

The Shelleys has a great deal to offer with our staff naturally saddened by this review as they work diligently to deliver a superlative service
