We had a fantastic stay at The Shelleys. It's a lovely hotel with fantastic large, comfortable rooms and a very personal feel. We attended a wedding and the staff we friendly, helpful and accommodating throughout. The food was top notch - especially the breakfasts!

The Shelleys was chosen (after visiting many similar venues locally) by our son and future daughter-in law for their wedding in October 2010.

They booked the hotel for our exclusive use, by reserving all rooms.

A spacious, and beautiful, very old building with plenty of character, but with exceptional well-dressed staff with traditional customer skills mixed with pleasant courtesy.

Although every member of staff was polite and efficient, most credit must go to Andrew Hawkes, the Conference and Banqueting Manager, who not only helped plan the entire day (a Civil Wedding Ceremony, Reception and Evening Meal, Evening Dancing with live music and Wedding Breakfast on the following day) but was calmly and discreetly attentive throughout.

Our large, comfortable bedroom overlooked the well-kept gardens, to the rear, which fortunately were still attractive at this time of year.

All rooms were unique and differently decorated.

Dining was superb for the wedding event, and there was a good choice for the ‘standard’ evening meal, (which we had on the Thursday night). This was perfectly cooked and served in an elegant dining room.

The Shelleys is located in a fascinating old town, with remarkable architecture, which is well worth a visit. The Castle is only a few minutes’ walk away.

The Bride looked beautiful.

My daughter and her fiance chose to hold their wedding at the Shelley's on 30 October, based partly on personal recommendations from previous guests but mainly because they were so impressed with the helpful and efficient staff, and the relaxed ambience of the hotel itself. The wedding was arranged at fairly short notice, and plans were inevitably subject to last minute alterations, but nothing phased Andrew, (Banqueting Manager) - the epitome of friendly professionalism, who surely went above and beyond the call of duty to fulfill their wishes. He made helpful suggestions based on his experience of organising other weddings, but at the same time listened carefully to what they wanted to achieve.
The Shelley's is a charming old building with uneven stone-flagged floors, gorgeous chandeliers and comfortable sofas. It is ideal for a smaller wedding such as ours, but easily accommodated our extra evening guests and the bride's brother's 15 piece swing band!
On the day of the wedding staff worked tirelessly - efficiently & unobtrusively re-arranging furniture in both drawing room and dining room to accommodate different elements of the celebrations.
The food was amazing - from the post-ceremony canapes and sit-down wedding breakfast to the afternoon tea with home-made cookies, to the bacon egg & sausage sandwiches for our evening buffet, which friends are still talking about!
At the very end of October we were blessed with a fine, warm day so could take full advantage of the pretty garden.
Some of our family booked to stay overnight, and our room was charming and extremely comfortable. Our wonderful breakfast the next morning rounded off an unforgettable experience in fine style!

My wife & I booked The Shelleys as the venue for the wedding breakfast and evening reception following our marriage at Lewes Registry Office. Although we were only having a small wedding (15 for the wedding breakfast, with 20 more in the evening) we wanted a high quality venue for the meal and reception.
We were initially impressed by the hotel's willingness to tailor a package to our needs, despite the small numbers attending. We were offered a bespoke menu and set up that was exactly to our requirements.
On the day everything was organised professionally and smoothly, so we were able to fully enjoy the occasion with no last minute worries or problems.
Several friends and family members stayed the night with us, so we must have seen inside 6 or 7 bedrooms. All were individually decorated, spacious, well maintained and full of character.
We would highly recommend The Shelleys as a wedding venue, or simply as a lovely hotel to stay in. We hope to return for a weekend away to mark our first anniversary...

Our daughter's wedding was arranged at fairly short notice, so many of the arrangements were made in a semi-chaotic fashion. We visited several venues for the reception, Shelleys Hotel being one of them. It is always something of a risk, but location, proximity to the church and the warm, friendly and efficient way we were dealt with there was the clincher. Once that decision was made, the coordinator at the hotel, Andrew, kind of took over and provided an advice service beyond what we anticipated. I guess weddings are always nerve-racking events for the bride's parents, but I have to say that the whole (reception) process was smoothed by the entire staff at the hotel. A group of family and friends stayed overnight in the hotel, and we were not disappointed. I would very much recommend the Shelleys Hotel in Lewes, especially for wedding receptions or other party-like events.
