“Great Old English Pub and Pub Food”
Reviewed 19 February 2014

Best tempura prawns with hoisin sauce ever, not to mention an ace "bloody" Mary. Lovely olde world pub, staff very welcoming and efficient and felt right at home. Really worth a visit

“Excellent pub, with excellent beer”
Reviewed 28 January 2014

It's hardly surpising that the beer here is excellent, because it's literally across the road from the Harvey's brewery and shop; and I have been in it when the head brewer popped in for a lunchtime tincture. That's quality control... The Best Bitter is in barrels balanced on the back of the bar, with swaddling so it doesn't get too hot in warm weather, and is utterly fab (if you like proper English bitter, that is...).

The food is not haute cuisine, but it is very good standard pub fare, with oddities like vension sausages to extend the normal egg/chips/beans range that most hostelries have. Satisfying portions. And a reasoanble range of puds, if you've any room left.

The decor is good standard pub stuff - wood floor, plain wood tables and various styles of chair. Not at all fancy, and just like a pub should be. And no bloody muzak. In warm weather you can sit outside and look at the river.

If I'm going for a drink in Lewes, this is where I go.

“Very good pub grub”
Reviewed 23 January 2014

We visited the John Harvey last weekend, and for a cold wet January Saturday night it was fairly busy. The food and the ale was very good, with all four of our meals top notch. The rabbit and leak pie was very good indeed, and if you choose to eat in the bar area instead of the restaurant, then the atmosphere is superb. The folk of Lewes are very lucky to have a pub like this,Eastbourne is crying out for one like it.

“Great pub, great atmosphere, great beer, great food”

Have visited this pub on numerous occasions. Always good food, good atmosphere. The menu is very good, ranges from sandwiches to game dishes. All tasty and priced well. Obviously the beer is amazing too!

“Pub Tour Sussex”
Reviewed 8 December 2013

This is the the best pub in Sussex. Firstly the beer is superb, probably as it is next door to the brewery. Well the Harvey's Best is superb, never felt inclined to try anything else. The place is always busy with a great clientele. The Ham Egg & Chips is the best I have had and I cannot see how it can be beaten. The thick cut ham, the just runny eggs or the thick cut chips, it is all perfect. I could quite easily stay there all day. I love all the staff too.
