“Sheer delight!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 June 2012

I love going to this restaurant, which is in the Pelham House hotel. It is right in the heart of Lewes, yet is so quiet and peaceful, it could be out in the countryside. I have always found the meals to be excellent, and very reasonably priced. I particularly enjoy eating in a delightful oak panelled room, and outside there is a huge terrace, facing a large garden, with beautiful views of the South Downs beyond it. The staff are always friendly and helpful and it is a joy to go there for either a meal, a drink, or just a coffee. One of my favourite places. The town itself is very lively and interesting, but does have a serious problem with parking, which is very expensive. I usually go there by public transport, but if I have ever had to drive there, I have booked a table and a parking space, in their limited parking area, well in advance. It is a nuisance, but that is problem to all of Lewes at any time.

“A 'quality' meal!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 April 2012

Just had to write something after reading the previous reviewer's experience... not mine at all (though there was no wedding on). We were a party of seven and had very good food and service... and a lovely venue. Was for my mother-in-laws 70th and felt suitably special.

“Great setting; shame about the food!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 March 2012

I travelled over 70 miles to meet two dear friends & booked at Pelham House. I now wish we had gone somewhere else. Their website mentioned a wedding on the day we had chosen. When I asked if that would be a problem they said "no". However, the bar - a very charming room - was heaving with wedding guests when we arrived. This made it difficult, although not impossible, to get a pre-lunch drink. The hotel was inundated with revellers in wedding gear all afternoon. Getting to, and into, the ladies' was not easy! The food was mediocre, verging on poor. Our starter, a crab salad, was not dissimilar to minced blotting paper with added vinaigrette. The main course, the ubiquitous oven-cooked sea bass, seemed to have been kept under a grill for some time and was dry and somewhat charred. Pudding was better, but not memorable. The staff were very pleasant but seemed to lack experience and training. We wanted to add a gratuity to the bill paid with two cards and one lot of cash but that seemed beyond them. The Pelham House website reveals that the hotel and restaurant are owned by a local Lewes family. Perhaps they should ask a distant relative to carry out a 'mystery guest' visit on their behalf! It was disappointing and the food was certainly not worth the price paid for lunch. But maybe functions, and the money they make, are more appealing than customers in their restaurant.
