It was good to see that the Sussex Trust for Nature spent big and got the scrub encroachment under control at the base of Fat Bellied Woman and along the allotments. However, I am somewhat alarmed by their introduction of cattle into the coombe. There was a reason why previous generations had used the Downs for grazing sheep, and when you see the damage that the cattle are doing to the perilously thin topsoil one understands why sheep grazing was so extensive. The heavy rain this winter has added to the soil erosion and I fear that if the trust persevere with this policy the coombe will not be able to recover.
