“Atmospheric and intriguing”

This is a wonderful place to visit, albeit a harsh reminder of how the vicious Henry VIII destroyed so much that was beautiful and spiritual. Lewes council has provided useful information boards but is largely hands-off. This means you can wander unhindered and try to imagine how the priory operated all those centuries ago. Very atmospheric and fascinating.

The priory in Lewes has undergone a complete renovation and the setting and the picture boards and the whole site are all so interesting and informative, you should not miss it.

“Interesting...”

Although there isn't too much of the priory left to see, there are good information boards which give you a good feel for the place. It's steeped in history and is a good way to spend half an hour

“Power of the Past”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 August 2013

The De Warennes were the Bill and Melinda of their day.Vast wealth poured into philanthropic work. Walk through this site regularly......and every time, am astonished at the magnitude of the enterprise and the medieval power that it represents. And how such greatness, over time, can be reduced to insignificance. Yet most buildings in Lewes have recycled Priory stone somewhere in their fabric......so life continues, albeit altered. A place to think!!!
