“Bit of a gamble..”

A group of us wanted to go to the anchor inn for food. I called up in the day and explained we wanted to come for food that evening. I asked 3 times if they did food, yes they said, until 10pm, that's late I said, yes, they said, we do food till late. I even mentioned the reviews on here and how I didn't want to drive all the way out and be disappointed! The girl laughed and said I wouldn't be...
We turned up at 7.30pm, kitchen was closed, no food on Tuesdays, ha ha, they got us!
It's a great location, an I imaging when the present owners realise that they have no skill in running a pub and move on it could be taken over by someone with a bit of sense.
It's really out of the way so you have to make a real effort to get to it.
River is very pretty, boats are very expensive and man in car park said if you try to bring your own boat and the owner sees he will kick off. I'm glad we didn't meet him!
Went to the fish in isfield for food, excellent! Massive portions and very friendly welcome.
Only go to the anchor if you are prepared to Take a gamble, anything can happen the by the sounds of things!

We were apprehensive after reading the reviews but were pleasantly surprised. Lovely day out with a boat down the river Ouse. We had called & asked if we could bring a dog. Gladly they said yes of course. Popped in for a pint. Was lovely service, polite guys and helpful. Didn't eat but looked lovely food.
My only bad experience was the garden was infested with wasps. But they had tried to control that as best they could.

Deff recommend! Dont believe the poor reviews, it's an idillic setting & a great place. Do something diff with the family at a small price of £6 per person.

I concur entirely with another reviewer (Len H) as had the same experience. I cycled to this place from Plumpton College twice on the recommendation of college staff. Both times it was a Sunday, and both times I couldn't be bothered to keep queuing for a beer after a twenty minute wait and hardly moving. They just seem to employ no staff at all! Maybe that's just on a Sunday at 3pm of something, but the staff themselves were discussing the staffing issues negatively with annoyed customers. I didn't try the food there, but plates of roast dinner passed me a good few times whilst I was queuing, and the portion size looked a bit miserly. Bear in mind though that I'm used to eating at Hungry Horse pubs, so I don't normally do the whole quality over quantity thing! ha!
Went to the Royal Oak in Barcombe village instead. Lovely pub. If you were thinking of eating and wanted a better pub within about 5 miles of this one, I'd recommend the Bull at Ditchling.

We visited the Anchor Inn on a cold December morning and where the marquee normally stands was a patch of brown grass. However, the warm friendly welcome and vision of the pub during the summer months was enough for us to sign up to have our wedding reception at the Anchor Inn, and what a great decision that turned out to be. Stephanie and Simon (and the rest of the staff!) were absolutely brilliant in the lead up to the day - so helpful and flexible. We had a wonderful wedding day at the Anchor - the surroundings were picturesque, the marquee was perfect for our requirements and the boating added a brilliant little quirk to the day. We have received so many compliments on the day and while this is partly due to the beautiful location, it was also due to Steph and Simon helping to ensure the day ran smoothly and seamlessly. Steph in particular gave us some great advice - we couldn't have done it without her!

Thank you to everyone at The Anchor for helping to give us a fantastic wedding day to remember!

Visited Balcome Mills today with husband and two grandchildren on a warm cloudy day and took a picnic to eat by the side of the river where we were joined by a flock of friendly sparrows. (parked in the car park owned by the Anchor Inn and crossed the river to the far bank). Afterwards hired a boat for an hour but, as ever, the children wanted to continue on up the river so paid the extra on return. Young man in charge of the boats was pleasant and helpful. On our return had a drink in the Anchor's garden which was clean and well cared for.

I had the most amazing Hen party at this venue. Steph and Simon were wonderful and supplied a yummy bbq.We stayed in the chalet which is fantastic and very good value for money. The boating was brilliant. Sunday lunch top notch. We are all looking for excuses to have another weekend there. Loved it.

I do love this location - it's hard to fault an old English pub next to the river.
We went on a sunny Sunday in August when understandably it is at its busiest. Outside space is plentiful but fills up quickly.
Food is ok - roasts and sandwiches all priced competitively.
Service was on the slow side, though friendly. Our waitress did a few laps of the garden with our sandwiches, despite knowing our table number (this seemed to be happening quite a bit) and I cleared all the plates from the empty neighbouring table as it had been vacated for a while and was attracting wasps.
