Had lunch here yesterday. Service was absolutely brilliant. It was a hot day and we sat outside and the waiters made sure we had plenty of jugs of water to stop us from flagging. Had scallops to start and they were cooked to perfection. Main course of fish and superb eton mess for dessert. Price for 2 course is £19 and I think £24 or maybe £25 for 3 courses (lunch time).
Gardens are beautiful. I guess the only downside is the very small car park but there are plenty of other car parks nearby
Can't wait to return

This is review with scant mention of food. Prebooked table and arrived with friends for premeal drink. Ordered drinks, sorted wine and placed food order, which looked, on the menu, very acceptable for an evening out. All ok there. Shown to table, shortly after booked time, given bread, tasted wine in anticipation of first courses arriving. After half an hour nothing. Getting on for three quarters of an hour and patience running out a server was approached re time of delivery of first course. She went to check but did not return. Approached a male server, MD?, who brusquely informed that the first courses would take as long as it took to prepare and that might be a very long time. He was not in the least apologetic, he was contemptuous, disdainful and condescending. On the basis of this a complaint was made to the duty manager. He was apologetic but made no attempt to sort out the problem there and then despite our quite serious concern. The server in question actually added a snide comment to the proceedings in front of the duty manager thus reinforcing the case. Being shown to a table usually means the food is on its way. If there is a delay customers ought to be informed. Servers ought to be civil. An evening with friends was ruined. Needless to say a return visit to actually taste the food is out of the question.

We live in Lewes and have eaten at Pelham House many times, both for lunch and dinner. Even given the negatives I mention below, it is the closest you'll get to 'fine dining' in Lewes.

The last time we went there for dinner the food was, as always, excellent but the service poor. We were hoping this was an aberration but after a similar experience today at lunch it seems not.

This really is a shame as they've got the hard bit right (i.e. the food) but then make silly mistakes with the service, for example:
- We were asked if we wanted apple sauce on the pork only to be told, when the food arrived, that there wasn't any apple sauce. Why offer something that isn't available? Ironically, none of us would have asked for it had it not been offered.
- Our food arrived before our cutlery, so we had to sit and look at it for a while (while tempted to use our fingers!)
- The chips were sprinkled with sugar instead of salt (which was laughable, until we remembered how much we would be paying).
- Our three year old's ice cream took ages to arrive (even after we reminded them about it) and, when it did arrive, was mostly melted and had obviously be sitting waiting in the kitchen.
- After (in our opinion) superciliously telling us we couldn't sit in the reserved area (we hadn't booked) the maitre d ignored us throughout our entire lunch preferring to attend to the 'pre-booked' area (people there were better dressed than we were - maybe that was a factor). We wouldn't have minding this had the service he was presumably overseeing been up to scratch.

That said, we had a most enjoyable time drinking vinho verde in the sun in a beautiful garden, eating really good food.

We were given one of the rooms in the outhouses, which was lovely but not quite the indoor palace you'd think you were getting from the website. That said, we were happy. The breakfast was plentiful and peaceful. We didn't eat dinner there as we like to get out and about but the menu looked good. Lewes is a lovely old town and great for a couples break.

Room Tip: Tell them you'd like to see the inside rooms - especially if it's cold out. If you want peace though, the outhouse rooms are lovely, especially if there's an 'event' on in the hotel.

As we regularly attend the Glyndebourne Opera Festival, we have used P.H. as a base for a number of years, often with friends or family. The location is excellent, the building charming, the garden beautiful. I love the frescoed ceiling in the hall; I never tire of admiring it and have even taken photos of it. The art exhibits throughout the hotel and the garden add to the charm. The panelled dining/breakfast room is also impressive. The bedrooms, however, vary a great deal and so does the price. This year I decided to book a so-called executive room (no. 6), considerably more expensive than a standard one. Retrospectively, I think that the difference in price is not justified: although the room is much larger than a standard and the view is charming, the facilities are not so different. One of the windows had an old sash which was badly in need of adjusting, as a strong draught was blowing through it. The first night we came back to a tidy room, blinds pulled down, chocolate on the turned-down bed, etc. The second night: no turn-down (the same in our son's room). As we had had a cup of tea in the afternoon while getting ready for Glyndebourne, this meant I had some washing up to do, since we wanted some refreshment before retiring. Not a nice surprise when you come back late. The room was also in some disarray and quite cold because the blinds were still up and the weather had been unseasonably cool. The next morning I told the young man at reception about the mishap. He said he was going to enquire about what had happened, but I never heard any more. The third night the turn-down service resumed. This year most of the staff were pleasant and helpful, particularly the lady that supervises breakfast.
