“Good small hotel”
Reviewed 2 May 2007

This is a good hotel in a pleasing location near the station and local amenities. The restaurant is particularly good, on the evidence of a recent dinner there, though not cheap and perhaps a little pretentious. Beds are on the hard side, but the refitted bathroom I had, though cramped, was pretty good, with a powerful shower. Rooms are clean, with adequate facilities.

The corridors are rather noisy, and breakfast is limited unless you are prepared to pay extra or are a conference guest (the hotel hosts a lot of conferences and business events). Overall, reasonable value for money. Staff were helpful, and the common parts are attractive.

I got married at Pelham House in October and I really couldn't fault it. It is a fantastic, historic building with parquet flooring and panelling which has been sensitively complemented by pale greens and creams and the most incredible art displayed in the common areas, most notably Julian Bell's highwire painting on the ceiling of the foyer. The gardens are also beautiful, full of unusual sculptures.

The rooms are all different (I looked at all of them as we hired the entire house) – which adds to the eclectic feel – ranging from the quirky and bijou to gargantuan and glamorous. The bathroom in the bridal suite is something else and wood panelled room no. 9 is also amazing. Furnishings are opulent but fashionably minimal and beds are beyond comfy. They have recently added new rooms in a mews building opposite the main entrance and these are also large with huge beds and chic decor.

The cuisine at Circa, the restaurant, may not be to everyone's tastes as it is quite experimental and wouldn't suit old-fashioned palettes, but it's been fully booked every night I've been so that's a good testament to its popularity. The produce is usually locally sourced and of a very high quality – fish dishes are a speciality and the desserts are to die for. The catering for our reception was second to none – so many of our guests commented it was the best wedding breakfast they'd every had – and the serving staff made sure all the dishes reached the table piping hot, which can often be a problem when catering for 100+ people.

The staff, particularly manager Ashley and receptionist Ivana, were tremendously helpful in the run up to the day and during our stay – my only comment would be that some of our guests had to queue to pay as the reception was only manned by one person, but, to be fair, that was mainly because we all checked out at the same time.

All in all, a wonderful experience. We'll definitely be returning to the restaurant and if we didn't live only a few miles away, I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.

  • Liked — The gorgeous architecture, decor and gardens and amazing food and wine
  • Disliked — Had to queue to check out
  • Tips/Secrets — Book room no. 9 and try the blue swimmer crab salad

We stayed here a while ago following a function. Rooms were modern and clean. Bathroom equally modern and clean. Food was very good; room service (breakfast) was prompt well presented (and the food was still hot when it arrived!). All our extra requests were catered for. We found the front desk assistant (Chloe) to be professional and courteous, and also the weddings coordinator (Tracey) to be very professional, reliable and helpful in every aspect. Overall our stay was faultless and everything you asked for was not a problem.

We had a really lovely stay at Pelham House.

After a ten mile walk across the Downs (really recommended!) we arrived Pelham House, complete with muddy boots.

Our room was delightful, with a great shower, and super comfy bed.

Because of our muddy boot situation, we asked if we could go down to the restaurant in our socks - which they were super nice about. Food was nice too - perhaps too fusion-y, but nevermind - there are plenty of other places to eat in Lewes if that isn't your thing.

Breakfast was fine. So there was no fried stuff, but there was plenty of fresh fruit, cereal etc etc.

  • Liked — really friendly staff, lovely panelled reading room
  • Disliked — n/a
  • Tips/Secrets — Lewes is shut on Sundays!!

No complaints at all about the deluxe room, which was large, comfortable and which had a wonderful view over the Downs. The bed was also big and comfortable and the bathroom, which did have a bath, worked well.
Having paid £150 for B&B, we were therefore surprised to learn that only the limited continental breakfast is included and you have to pay an additional £6 odd for a cooked one. We also learned that for this money, you don't get any choice but are served a "standard plate"!
The real insult is that you are served in no way at breakfast and cannot even get a pot of tea, you have either to dunk a teabag into a cup of hot water or opt for tepid coffee from a flask. Horrid.
Will opt to stay elsewhere next time in Lewes.
